Next deadline Oct. 21st - 12:00 Noon Our Mission Statement: Concord Trinity United Methodist Church is a welcoming community of seekers, believers, and disciples.

In a Still Small Voice If you were to walk into the sanctuary here at Concord Trinity on a Sunday evening, you would notice a very different worship service taking place. There would not be very much lighting, the projector screen would be off, and you would not hear the sound system humming through the speakers. Yes, it is safe to say that all of this is a change from our morning worship, but what is the purpose of it all? The Reflective Service serves many purposes, but I would say that it can all be summed up in one word: listening. During our time of prayer, we listen to each other as we lift up ways God has blessed us or burdens with which we are troubled. We listen and bring it to God together. I have seen people reach out to those who requested prayer, even after the service is over; a sign that we are truly listening to our brothers and sisters. While scripture is read, we are listening to God’s Word, which has been passed down to us through many generations. Then, after the scripture, comes the most challenging part: a time of silence. Honestly, the first time you experience total silence in a sanctuary with a group of people, it can feel like it lasts for years. But after we adjust, we realize that this is our time to listen to God. It is so difficult in this world to find time to listen to what God has to say, but it is also so vital to our journey with Him. In a time of silence, we have the chance to stop worrying about tomorrow and focus our minds and hearts on the Almighty. Only then, are we truly giving God the chance to examine our hearts and speak to us through His word. If you long for that quiet place to give God a chance to speak, look no further than this Reflective Service. The time has been created for you. Come join us in this truly unique experience at 6:00 pm every Sunday evening.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY Oct. 25th, All Services

28 DAYS OF PRAISE—How’s It Going?

Be sure to bring your 28 Days “Commitment Card” to church with you on the 25th. All will have a chance to consecrate their commitments to “Radical Hospitality,” “Intentional Faith Development,” “Risk-Taking Mission,” and “Extravagant Generosity”!

I’m delighted to report that after recent worship services, guests have heard about this program and have asked for copies of the devotional calendars! I hope you’re finding this spiritual exercise equally interesting and intriguing.

CONCORD CHARGE CONFERENCE Tuesday, Nov. 10 - 7 p.m., Sanctuary

By the time you read this, you should be nearing the end of the third week, with its emphasis upon “Risk Taking Mission.” You should receive shortly a packet containing materials for the last week, “Extravagant Generosity.”

For us, this annual event is much more than doing the “business” of the church [i.e., reports from Trustees, Nominations, Staff-Parish]! We’ll also celebrate God’s work through us this year, and take a look ahead through an updated Vision Plan. Our District Superintendent, the Rev. Kurt Schuermann, will preside. ALL are welcomed! Childcare will be provided.

I sincerely hope that throughout these days you’re feeling your spirit being refreshed and your faith renewed. Look ahead to worshipping on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, when all will be invited to consecrate the commitments they’ve made throughout these days.

Safety Information For security, anyone entering the church for any reason during the hours of 8:30 - 5:00 pm must enter through the Office entrance. All other doors to the building will be kept locked to help insure safety for those in the building. Also, anytime you visit the church, make sure your vehicles are locked.

“These days.” That has a nice ring to it. May you remember these days as opportunities to grow closer to the One who makes life special indeed!

As a reminder, the sanctuary is open from 11:001:00 pm for prayer Monday - Thursday every week. Please use Office entrance then, as well.

UPCOMING SERMON TOPICS/TEXTS Oct. 18—When Following Jesus Comes with a Price Tag (Mark 10:17-31) Jesus’ response to the rich man in this passage can sound harsh—or wonderfully inviting. Oct. 25—A Web of Gratitude (Deut. 24:19-22; Lev. 25:1-5,19-24) In a world of “getting and spending,” it’s refreshing to think of the riches we have that don’t cost a cent. Nov. 1—When Can We Go Back, Daddy? (Joshua 24:14-22) This “All Saints” Sunday gives us an opportunity to go back and visit the people and places that ground our faith.

Good News Announcements Cont. Successful Food Drive! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! To the Concord community and Concord Trinity members who made the September community food drive a success. One thousand bags were placed on front porches of homes located off Baptist Church Road,. and over 1,600 can goods were collected. That’s an average of 1.5 cans goods per household. Isn’t it great to know the Concord community supports the efforts of Concord Trinity? All can goods were placed in Fellowship Hall; and during one Wednesdays Alive, a group gathered to fill 47 food bags for families who come in during the week asking for food assistance. The church office staff greatly appreciates the time that was put into filling the bags and feels great about being able to help families who come in for help by giving them a full bag of items to be used to prepare a balanced meal for their families. Many thanks to the 40 plus people who helped make this first community drive a success.

Good News Announcements Cont. Children, as well as parents and Sunday school teachers, will enjoy a series of new books in the Children’s Library. Children learn the character of Christ by applying His teachings to their world. This delightful series of books from award winning children’s author Melody Carlson are whimsically and lovingly illustrated. They present children with typical situations they may face every day, but teach how they should conduct themselves by showing what Jesus would have said or done. Love Your Neighbor, Secretly Do Good Deeds, and Show Each Other Forgiveness – each of these three books teach a great truth that Jesus taught his disciples.

Good News Education Announcements

October: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF What is it? This very special program began in Philadelphia in 1950 when kids collected money in milk cartons to help children after WWII. Today, kids all across the U.S. turn Halloween into an opportunity to give children everywhere access to basic necessities.

A Note from Debbie . . . Every four years, the United Methodist Church sponsors a nation-wide, week-long Conference on Children’s Ministry. These conferences provide a chance to hear the latest ideas in Children’s Ministry and discover what other UMC churches are doing. This year’s conference was held in July in Indianapolis. This year, I had the honor of being selected to present two of the workshops. One workshop, entitled “Special Celebration Sundays” shared how to plan and prepare all of the great intergenerational and special celebrations we have at Concord Trinity. We covered Earth Day, Grandfriends Day, Back-toSchool Sunday and International Sunday School. The second workshop was “Incorporating Children in Worship,” and it caught on like wildfire! Christian educators from all over the United States (literally!) are still e-mailing me for more information about our Children’s Worship Pockets. More and more churches are realizing the importance of including children in the full worshipping body of the congregation. Concord Trinity UMC is definitely at the head of the pack in bringing children to worship and our whole congregation should be applauded! Every word of welcome, smile, and kindness that you show a child in worship brings them one step closer to a life-long commitment to worshipping God in community. It was such an honor to present workshops at this conference, and I was very proud to share what wonderful things are taking place in our congregation. Thank you to all of you for your inviting, caring, and nurturing ways with our children. Concord Trinity is on the map nationally as a great place to help children grow in faith. THAT is something to rejoice about!  In Christ,

How does it work? We suggest putting this box in the center of your kitchen table, or wherever you spend the most time together as a family. The calendar on the back page of the ParentLink newsletter has fun daily activities to help you learn more about children around the world, the UNICEF program, and suggestions for donations. It will provide creative ways to appreciate together the blessings your family has, and give you a chance to help other families around the world. ParentLink newsletters are available from your child’s Sunday School teacher or from the Education bulletin board across from the Nursery. What do we do with the box? Bring it to Sunday School each week in October. We’ll have a special “noisy-offering” time when we’ll collect the coins from the boxes. This money is tallied weekly and recorded on the chart on the bulletin boards across from the nursery and in the lower level hallway. Our goal is to raise $150. Be sure to check the chart each Sunday! 

Fun Facts about Ghana

Save the Date

Ghana has many types of traditional and modern music. The sound varies from ethnic group to ethnic group and from region to region. The most well known genres are Afro-jazz and it’s earliest form of secular music, Highlife. Highlife originated in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s and spread throughout West Africa. Afro-jazz refers to jazz music which has been heavily influenced by African music. The origins of Ghanaian hip hop goes back to the 1980’s when performers found a small audience performing highlife variations with fast spoken, poetic lyrics. With time, Ghanaians became influenced by American hip hop, reggae, and dance hall. This hybrid is called Hiplife and is now one of the most popular forms of music in West Africa.

Trunk or Treat Party! — Saturday, October 31st Come and join your friends at church on Saturday, October 31, from 3:30-5 pm for some tailgating, some trunk-or-treating, some spaghetti, and some Intergenerational fun! Our goal is 3-fold:  To provide a safe place to trick-or-treat for our youngest disciples.  To provide a warm tailgating fellowship experience for adults.  To mix and mingle with folks of all ages. How do we do this? First, we encourage all adults to register for a FREE parking spot. (The registration is for organization only.) From the parking spot, adults can decorate their cars and provide candy and goodies for our children right out of the trunk of their car! Children interested in dressing up and trunk-or-treating will also need to register, so that we can provide a number of children adults should plan for candy-wise. Adults can set up lawn chairs and watch the dressed up children go from car to car, having a Halloween experience in a safe place they trust. In the middle of the lot will be tailgating games, like washers, bag toss, etc, as well as some old carnival favorites like the Cake Walk, bobbing for apples, etc. See you there!
