• Electrostatics – the study of electric charges at rest or static electricity • Static electrical charges can be produced through friction

• Common phenomena : - hear little crackles when pulling plastic bag from a roll - hair is combed with a plastic comb, tuft of hair will be attracted to various parts of the comb

• Two types of electric charges : 1. negative charge ( - )– charge that presents on a rubbed polythene strip - polythene strip gains extra electrons, becomes negatively charged

2. Positive charge ( + ) - charge that present on a rubbed cellulose acetate strip. - cellulose acetate loses electrons and becomes positively charged

• The electroscope uses repulsion of the gold leaf to indicate when something is charged

Positively charged rod induces negative charges on the brass cap and negative charges at the brass rod and gold leaf

Mutual repulsion of positive charges causes the gold leaf to diverge

• Like charges repel while unlike charges attract
