Malane Newman is a multi-talented professional artist that specializes in cartoon art and illustration, or affectionately known as Toons. She’s been drawing cartoons since she has been walking, and has spent her life mastering different cartoon styles; from Disney to South Park, and from Marvel to Mad Magazine. Cartoon illustration is used today in every form of entertainment and advertising, like print, television and the web. Malane Newman has demonstrated boundless imagination and has had experience drawing in various styles for many of these mediums throughout her professional career. Malane Newman has extreme passion for cartooning and teaches cartooning at a local art school in San Diego. To share some of her passion for cartooning with you, she has developed some beginning training lessons on how to draw Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto in profile, in full-face and full body construction. She has also made available some lessons from her Famous Character Drawing Classes. They are available, free of charge, as online and downloadable drawing tutorials and famous character drawing tutorials. Malane Newman currently holds the prestigious position of being the “first and only "female" lead illustrator” in the now, 55 year history of PS Magazine (a 68-page monthly comic-book style publication produced and distributed to our troops by the US Army). She has even designed Computer-Based Training (CBT) using cartoons for companies like SBC.

Some of her contract projects have included; Marvel-style cartoon advertisements for Deloitte Consulting, a greeting card for the San Diego Padres, bank pamphlets for Santel Credit Union, full front-page cartoon illustration for the San Diego Weekly Newspaper, among many others. Malane Newman’s cartoon artwork has even been published as Greeting Cards, coloring books, and children’s books. There is even a line of T-Shirts produced with her cartoon

Guru besar hukum tata negara Universitas Indonesia ini terpilih menjadi Ketua Mahkamah Konstitusi (MK) dengan meraih 5 suara dari delapan anggota MK yang hadir dalam sidang perdana MK di Kantor Mahkamah Agung di Jakarta, Selasa 19/8/03. Sementara hakim agung Dr Mohammad Laica Marzuki terpilih sebagai wakil ketua. Laica Marzuki sendiri tidak hadir karena sakit.

Tak Sangka Jadi Hakim MK Ketua Pengadilan Tinggi Bengkulu ini tidak menyangka akan terpilih menjadi hakim konstitusi. Ketua Mahkamah Agung yang memilihnya untuk jabatan baru itu. Lulusan Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia 1967 ini mengaku ditelepon Bagir Manan 10 hari sebelum pelantikannya.

Wakil Ketua Mahkamah Konstitusi Dalam sidang perdana Mahkamah Konstitusi (MK) di Kantor Mahkamah Agung di Jakarta, Selasa 19/8/03 Dr Mohammad Laica Marzuki ini terpilih sebagai wakil ketua MK. Ia sendiri tidak hadir karena sakit. Pada usia 62 tahun ia diangkat menjadi hakim konstitusi pilihan Mahkamah Agung. Sebelumnya ia menjabat hakim agung sejak tahun 2000.

(Purn) kelahiran Banjaran, Jawa Barat, 1 Maret 1941 ini merupakan hakim konstitusi tertua. Maka dialah yang memimpin rapat pertama Mahkamah KOnstitusi untuk memilih pimpinan Mahkamah Konstitusi.

Doktor Hukum Tata Negara Jakarta 16/8/03: Presiden Megawati melantik sembilan hakim konstitusi di Istana Negara, Jakarta, Sabtu 16/8/03. Kesembilan hakim konstitusi itu adalah Penetapan hakim konstitusi ini tertuang dalam dituangkan dalam Keppres No 147/M/2003 yang ditandatangani Presiden hari Jumat 15/8/03. Kesembilan hakim konstitusi merupakan perpaduan pilihan pemerintah, DPR dan MA masingmasing tiga orang. Tiga hakim konstitusi pilihan pemerintah yakni Prof HAS Natabaya SH LLM (Staf Ahli Khusus Menkeh &HAM), Prof Dr Mukhti Fadjar SH, (guru besar hukum tata negara Universitas Brawijaya), dan Dr Haryono SH MCL (anggota MPR Utusan Daerah Jawa Timur). Hakim konstitusi pilihan DPR yakni Prof Dr Jimly Asshiddiqie SH (guru besar tata negara Universitas Indonesia), Letjen (Purn) Achmad Roestandi anggota Majelis Pakar DPP PPP, dan I Dewa Gede Palguna SH MH Wakil Sekretaris F-PDIP MPR. Tiga hakim konstitusi pilihan MA yakni Dr H Mohamad Laica Marzuki

Ia diangkat jadi hakim konstitusi pilihan pemerintah. Sebelumnya ia diajukan Fraksi PDIP DPR, tapi mengundurkan diri karena akan dicalonkan pemerintah. Walaupun ia mengaku tak pernah dipanggil Presiden Megawati Sukarnoputri sehubungan dengan pencalonan menjadi hakim konstitusi itu.

Dosen Hukum Tata Negara Pria kelahiran Bangil, Bali, 24 Desember 1961 ini merupakan hakim konstitusi termuda. Dosen hukum tata negara Fakultas Hukum Universitas Udayana ini sangat aktif ketika membahas amandemen UUD 1945 di Panitia Ad Hoc I badan Pekerja MPR. Ia menjadi hakim konstitusi pilihan DPR atas dukungan Fraksi PDIP.

This tutorial will show you how to structure and outline a basic manga character. Using a wireframe figure, you can get the main parts of the pose correct and in proportion before adding detail. When drawing a manga character, the right proportions are important. You are about 7.5 heads tall. Manga action heroes tend to have more elongated proportions, at least 8 heads tall, often taller. The comparatively small head heightens the dramatic effect of a low viewpoint in the towering ‘hero’ stance.

This is a very different look to the big-headed style of cartoon. Otherwise body proportions are pretty much standard: your shoulder to your elbow is roughly the same length as your elbow to your wrist. The same goes for the hip to the knee and knee to the ankle. I generally like to begin the wireframe figure by placing (not finishing) the head, then going into the rest of the wireframe, because the head usually guides the body. The detail is developed along with the rest of the figure, not finished first.

Using a Basic Wireframe to Structure a Manga Character

A simple wireframe base for a character drawing P. Stone, licensed to About.com, Inc.

We're going to start drawing a character using a simple wireframe. For this example, we'll use a basic, standing pose so you can see how it works.

Copy the wireframe man, adding circles and ovals (as shown in the picture to the left) between the joints where muscles should go. Make them slender for a lean character like this one, or thicker for a bulkier build. Keep in mind that you still want to practice all types of builds in order to improve at the art style, and that anime characters don’t tend to be as muscular as western cartoon characters. The forearm and calf muscles don’t continue all the way to the wrists and ankles, because the limbs narrow towards those joints.

Next draw the outline curvy, quite continuous lines that defines the character. The gradual curve of these lines is very important. Sharp corners on a figure tend to look mechanical rather than organic, and so look wrong.

As you can see, the figure I’ve drawn here is male. Aside from having breasts, females will have wider hips and thinner waists, giving the “hourglass” shape. Manga style dictates that their shoulders are less broad than men, and their necks more slender. Often artists draw women in a stance such that their feet are touching to further enhance the hourglass shape. Next go ahead and erase the guidelines within the outline. The wire-and-ball approach is a common one for drawing figures, and is a useful place to start. Once you’re confident, you’ll find that you’ll often use just a suggestion of a framework, sometimes skipping straight to the outline. This is a simple character to begin with. The wireframe method is useful for working out quick poses, too. Try roughing out some character ideas using

the wireframe method. See if you can copy poses from photographs of athletes and martial arts exponents, or use a wooden artist's manikin to set up a pose.

Meet Vin. Vin is a character that I intend to animate, and as a

result I’ve done a character sheet/character breakdown for him. Character sheets let you create a reference for your character, covering the basic views and making sure that your proportions match from drawing to drawing. It’s good practice for keeping things in proportion (even if your proportions include a tendency to freakishly long limbs, like mine) and getting used to drawing your character’s facial expressions. This character sheet is a simplified breakdown of more detailed character concept art; you need to reduce your character to as few lines as possible. For an idea of how to do that and why it’s necessary, take a look at the lesson on building an animation-ready character from the ground up. This is just a basic example character sheet, with the very minimum for the sake of demonstration. Before animating, you should try to build a larger sheet with more detail for your character. In the next few steps, we’ll take a closer look at the various breakdown poses.

The side view is the easiest to draw – for me, anyway. You only have to worry about one of each limb, and the

side view usually lets me get down the positions of the facial features relative to each other. If your character has distinguishing markings on one side or another that causes him or her to look different from either side, you’ll want to do two side views to illustrate the difference. While we’re looking at this, take a look at those lines that I’ve drawn behind each view. You’ll notice that save for minute shifts due to pose, those lines join corresponding places on each pose: the top of the head, the waist/elbows, fingertips, pelvis, knees, shoulders. After drawing the first view, it’s usually a good idea to pick your major points and use a ruler to draw lines from those major points and across the entire sheet, before sketching over them for the other views. This way you’ll have reference to make sure that you’re drawing everything to scale.

For your front view, try to draw your character standing straight, legs together or at least not too far apart, hands hanging at his or her sides with little deviation, face turned straight forward. You can save the attitude poses for later; right now you just want to

get the basic details down and clearly in sight, and the front view generally proves the best view of the major character points.

There’s nothing wrong with cheating a little for the rear view and just retracing your front view with a few details changed. Don’t forget that if anything is oriented to a specific side, it’s going to reverse on the rear view. (Example above: the part in Vin’s hair, the slant of his belt.)

Most of the time you won’t be drawing your character straight-on, either from the front or from the side. A 3/4 view is one of the most common angles that you’ll draw your character at, so you’ll definitely need to include one of these in your character sheet. You can be a bit more free with the pose here; try to capture your character’s expression and attitude.

Along with the 3/4 shot, you should also draw some action shots – various poses caught mid-motion, detailing how clothing or hair might move. You’ll see that the various key reference points don’t perfectly line up with the guidelines anymore, because of the angle. Instead they should cross right at the midsection of the point being measured - for instance, the one shoulder would be above the line marking the default height for them, while the other shoulder would be below. The hollow of the throat, a midpoint for the shoulders, should rest almost exactly on the guideline. I like to color my 3/4 view, just to get a look at how my character will look in color – and so I’ll have those colors available later, as I prefer to color my animations digitally and my character sheet now has all the default character colors I need, just an eyedropper selection away. I try to keep my colors to as few as possible - mostly just a solid color and a shadow color for each section, although in some cases I will include a highlight color. Shadows and highlights can be difficult to animate because they don't have solidly drawn boundaries that carry over to the final

artwork, so they should be done as simply as possible.

Lastly, you should try to draw a detailed close-up of your character’s face, as it can tend to get minimized and a little sloppy in full-body shots. (You should draw close-ups of any other important parts, too – like perhaps an engraved pendant, tattoo, or other marking that might normally be drawn without details in full-body shots. Don’t forget to draw ears. Ears get overlooked quite often. See above. I’m guessing Vin looks so aghast because he’s missing an ear; that looks painful.) I only have two facial

expressions drawn here for example, but you should draw at least ten of the most common expressions for your character – whether he or she is generally smug, fearful, excited, happy, angry, etc. Keep drawing until you think you’ve covered their entire range of emotions.
