Steph Altenhof. 104325825 General Information - nature and proposed location of the project Description of our project and proposed actions o The purpose of this project is to apply several techniques and steps of the EIA process that mimic a real-life situation. The proposed project is the construction of an international bridge spanning between Windsor, ON and Detroit, MI. to accommodate the influx of transportation from/to Canada and the US. The processes in this report include project requirements, a location suitability analysis, a screening process, baseline description, VEC identification, impact identification and analysis, impact mitigation and monitoring components. o Project Requirements The proposed international bridge project consists of 3 main components: The international bridge, a customs plaza and highway that would run from Highway 401 in Windsor to the bridge. Since the highway is a concern of the MTO, a decision is required under the Ontario EAA. Due to this project being an opportunity to apply the processes and techniques of EIAs, this project will only be concerned with the construction of the international bridge. Therefore, a decision under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and in the US, a decision under the National Environmental Policy Act is required. ((from http://www.downloads.ene.gov.on.ca/files/eaab/detroit_river_Revi ew.pdf ) p.5 Project Requirements - o employment resources o length of project o Size o sources of emissions/wastes, o end of project decommissioning, o Costs Can look at similar projects to determine?

Location Analysis – in the process ** need to cite parameters

o Within (3-500m) highways on each end (US- by Hwy, M, US) o On border (Within 50m of AOC) – highlighted selection o Ideally away from residential areas [define parameter] and streams [parameter] NEED DATA o Doesn’t intersect a park (10m) - done. o Away from schools (300m) o Away from hospitals (500m) o Away from heritage sites (50m… just dont want to be on one) Steps: o Buffer. Input: Parks Output: ParksBuff Linear Unit: 10m Units: metres Side type: Full End Type: Round Dissolve Type: All o Repeat for schools, hospitals, heritage sites, residential and streams o For roads -> need to isolate expressways/highways. Open attribute table and “Select by attributes” SQL query is “UNITTYPE= EXP” (figure out what to isolate for US side) Then buffer Steph Altenhof. 104325825 Intersect “within features” o Erase. Input” within features” Erase “Away from” features Erase Buff layers that … figure this out when I get there. May also need to sacrifice something if there is no location after overlay analysis

Progress:

Effects – Screening
