Julie Eckenrode May 5, 2009 Effective Teaching Effective teaching is so important to have present in every class. In the article, “Terrific Teaching Tips” by Laurel Borgia and Carol Owles, they explain the challenge of creating an effective classroom environment that stimulates students through instruction. Throughout the article they give various tips for Pre-K, Primary, Intermediate, and Secondary level students. For the Pre-K level they recommended reading aloud to students and have them visualize the story and as for the Primary level they recommended teaching the students to code the text by using the KIQ format: find key information, find interesting information, and question unclear things in reading. The in the Intermediate level they recommend the strategy of determining the main idea by using “Important to Whom” concept that focuses on what important to remember and what the authors main idea. Lastly for the secondary level the strategy given was to, make a reading like a scavenger hunt so the students can read and find the important information that is needed to complete the scavenger hunt. This article gives wonderful examples of how to effectively teach and engage students of multiple levels in a reading activity. It is so important to make sure that students are challenged appropriately for their grade level but are still engaged in the activity. I believe that Laurel Borgia and Carol Owles gave great tips that I would use in the future and recommend to other teachers as well.
