At 14.00 MINISTER LAUNCHING NEW PROGRAMME AND WEBSITE (www.webwise.ie) FOR SCHOOLS TEACHERS PUPILS AND PARENTS ON EUROPEAN INTERNET SAFETY DAY-JEROME M O R R I S S E Y f ^ ^ M V B - CLOCK TOWER
Brief description of Internet Safety Day on Feb 7 t h 2006:
The theme for the day will be net ethics i.e. encouraging responsible approach to the Internet by pupils, including acceptable practice in relation to copyright and communicating online. To help highlight the issue in the context of the positive use of the internet by young people all over the world, we will participate in a Blogathon with over 25 other countries, mainly in Europe but also in New Zealand and Australia. For Internet Safety Day we will be officially launching Webwise.ie, the website of our internet safety initiative. This website will provide internet safety information, advice, and tools to students, teachers and parents. The information for teachers will include guidelines, exemplars and templates for formulating acceptable use policies in schools, access to online interactive resources, activity sheets and lesson plans for teaching internet safety in the classroom, and a digital file checking tool for IT Coordinators to use to make sure that the school's ICT isn't being used for inappropriate activities such as file sharing.

CONFIRMED AT 15.30 MINISTER MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT OF HARBIN INSTITUTE OF^ TECHNOLOGY IN CHINA PROFESSOR WANG SHUGUO-MELDA SLATTERY D I T - | ( m ^ K e v i n attending with the minister) Professor Brian Norton will accompany group ROOM 716 LEINSTER HOUSE
DIT has a close partnership with Harbin Insitute of Technology in China and they will be welcoming the President of the University, Professor Wang Shuguo and a delegation of eight of his colleagues on a visit to Ireland from 12-17 February. By way of background, Harbin is one of China's most highly-regarded universities. Indeed, when President McAleese visited China in October 2003 she was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by Harbin, the first such honour ever accorded a visiting Head of State. I think Minister Hanafin will also be familiar with Harbin from her own more recent visit to China.DIT has had a close association with HIT for some years, and we run programmes in partnership with them whereby students undertake the first two years of their engineering degree in Harbin and then come to DIT to complete the next two years. While the delegation is in Dublin DIT will be holding the final graduation ceremony for the 2005 Academic Year, and the Honorary Degrees Committee has just approved the nomination of Professor Shuguo to be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate at that ceremony in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Thursday 16 February at 7.30 pm.
