Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise (ELSIE) As each word is read, circle the number indicating your response according to the following code: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise (ELSIE) The following words are to be used with Harry Reinert's Learning Style Identification Exercise. Instructions for administering the exercise follow: A. Inform participants that you will be reading 50 words, and that for each word, they are to circle a number according to the following code: 1.

You immediately have a mental picture of some object or activity. 2. You immediately have a picture of a word spelled out. 3. You have no immediate mental picture; the sound of the word carries the meaning. 4. You immediately experience a physical or emotional feeling about the word. B. Inform participants that you will begin with two sample words to demonstrate the process. They should not circle any numbers here, but should think about which ones they would circle if the words were part of the exercise. First sample word: sink (Ask a few participants for their first reactions; some may see a kitchen or bathroom sink; some may see a ship or boat sinking; some may see either sink or sync spelled out; some may feel either "in sync" or "out of sync"; some may "just know" from hearing the word.) Second sample word: hold (Again, ask a few participants for their first reactions; some may have a feeling of being held; some may see a ship's hold; some may see the word spelled out; and some may "just know" from hearing the word.) C. Read the words consecutively, without enumerating them.
