What is Economic Development?  A process that leads a country from a

state of underdevelopment, characterized by low per capita income and poor quality of life, to one of higher living standards for a large majority of its people.  Development is a multidimensional process involving change from a less to a more socially desirable state ( Process and Condition)

Purposes of Economic Development  Eradication of global poverty  Eradication of inequalities in living standards  Reducing global disparities of power and influence

Actors involved in Economic Development  Governments  International organization  Civil society organizations  Banks

Historical Facts  The era of modern economic growth started

from industrial revolution in Britain in 18th century.  After WWII the International system proclaimed the issues of:  The Third World  International Organizations  Western Governments

 Economic development has become a right of people living in poverty.

MDGs and Economic Development  In the 2000 UN Summit the world leaders established eight Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015.  Goal #1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.  Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day  Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger

Achieving this goal drives economic development!

Monterrey Consensus and E.D  March 2002: * The UN convened an International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, Mexico. * Both MDGs and the Monterrey Consensus provides the key normative underpinning of contemporary development strategy.

QUESTION???  According to what had already done by the nations on the MDGs, it still true that the MDGs will be halved by 2015, or you think it will be done before, or they need more time, if so, why and why not ???  Global studies students and other national and international fields are ready for you to develop the World, “Good Luck, all !!!”
