Little changes make a world of difference Though Kermit the Frog has shared many wise sayings with his young audiences throughout the years, I have to argue with him on one point: it is easy being green. No matter what your situation in life, it takes almost nothing to lessen your impact on the environment. In some cases, it’s as easy as becoming more aware. When you leave the house and know you’re going to swing by a coffee shop, grab a reusable mug. This not only cuts down on the waste of a cup, but in most cases, the shops will even give you a discount. Going to the store? Grab a canvas bag or even a plastic bag from a previous trip. I like to keep mine under the passenger seat in my car. When I get home, I just empty it, hang it on the side door and take it out to the car the next time I leave the house. Again, shops like Earth Fare will give you a small discount as motivation. When you are out shopping, look for recycled items: aluminum foil (recycled foil uses just 1/20 of the energy to make as regular foil), trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels, even bigger items like construction material and clothing are made with recycled materials. Finally, buy local. The less an item has to be shipped, from milk to vegetables to bread and meat, the more you cut down on pollution and at the same time help to support your local community. So next time you leave your house for the day, consider a few things you might be able to do to help the world around you. Just one little change (take a minute less in the shower, wait until you have a full load to run the washing machine) can make all the difference. By Kristin Hackler
