Dr. V. Abdur Rahim Dr. V. Abdur Rahim, recipient of this year's President of India Award for his services for the promotion of Arabic language is little known in India.Having led the better part of his scholarly life outside the country, he shot into prominence with the honour being conferred by the President of India Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma last June. Hailing from the small town of Vaniyambadi in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Rahim has to his credit, honours and positions hardly ever known among even Arabic-teaching fraternity in India.His tireless service for the language and refreshingly innovative ideas for the teaching of the Arabic language have taken him to innumerable destinations in the Arab World and the West.Holding an ‘Afzalul Ulema' from Madras University and M.A. from Aligarh Muslim University, Dr. Rahim acquired a doctorate in Arabic from Al-Azhar University of Cairo. Having taught Arabic at the Islamic University at Omdurman (Sudan), Germany, Washington D.C., British Guyana and Islamic University of Madinah, Dr. Rahim today heads the Qur'an Translation Centre at the King Fahd Qur'an Printing Complex in Madinah as its Director. A Function: - The highlight of the annual day celebrations of Tansri Ubaidulla Matric H.S. School, Rajaghiri, Thanjavur district, was the pattimandram held on the topic “Is life a bed of roses or a platform of struggle?” The Professor of Tamil, Islamia College, Vaniyambadi, K. Abdul Raheem, was the moderator. Four professors from different colleges including Vedanayaki, Manikandan and Balan presented their arguments. Prof. Abdul Raheem gave his judgement in favour of “life is a bed of roses”. The president of the school, N.A. Abdul Majeed, its trustee S. A. Abdul Bari, secretary A. Shahul Hameed and managing trustee R.A. Noor Mohamed offered felicitations.
