Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions

Inflammatory disorders including: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis. Mild to moderate pain. Fever, Prophylaxis of transient ischemic attacks and MI

Hypersensitivity to aspirin, cross-sensitivity with other NSAIDs may exist. Do not crush or chew enteric-coated tablets.

Mechanism of action and indications

Common side effects Tinnitus, GI bleeding, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia, hepatotoxicity, vomiting, anemia, hemolysis, increased bleeding time.

Aspirin only decreases platelet aggregation.

Interactions with other patient Lab value alterations caused by medicine drugs, OTC or herbal medicines Monitor hepatic function, may cause increased serum AST, SLT and alkaline phosphatase (ask patient specifically) Pt on plavix which may increase risk of bleeding when taken with this drug.

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Take with a full glass of water and remain upright for 15 to 30 minutes afterward. Report tinnitus, bleeding gums, black, tarrystool, bruising, or fever lasting longer than 3 days. Avoid alcohol, tablets with a vinegar scent should be discarded, notify physician of regime before surgery.

Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Patients with asthma, allergies and nasal polyps are increased risk for hypersensitivity. Assess pain and limitation of movement, assess fever and vital signs

Evaluation Check after giving Assess pain, monitor serum salicylate levels periodically, may cause prolonged bleeding time for 4 to 7 days.
