Hypersensitivity to aspirin, tartrazine, or other slicylates, cross-sensitivity with other NSAIDs may exist.
Aspirin only decreases platelet aggregation.
Common side effects Tinnitus, GI bleeding, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia, hepatotoxicity, vomiting, anemia, hemolysis, increased bleeding time.
Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) May increase risk of bleeding with clopidogrel (plavix), increased risk of GI irritation with NSAIDs- ibuprofen OTC=arnica,chamomile, clove, feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, Panax ginseng and some others. Nursing Process- Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Patients with asthma, allergies and nasal polyps or who are allergic to tartrazine are increased risk for hypersensitivity. Assess pain and limitation of movement, assess fever. Vital signs
Lab value alterations caused by medicine Monitor hepatic function, may cause increased serum AST, SLT and alkaline phosphatase
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Take with a full glass of water and remain upright for 15 to 30 minutes afterward. Report tinnitus, bleeding gums, black, tarry stool, bruising, or fever lasting longer than 3 days. Avoid alcohol, tablets with a vinegar scent should be discarded, notify physician of regime before surgery.
