Reflection HAZARDS One of the "root causes" of workplace injuries, illnesses, and incidents is the failure to identify or recognize hazards that are present, or that could have been anticipated. A critical element of any effective safety and health program is a proactive, ongoing process to identify and assess such hazards. It is known that a hazard is anything that has a potential of causing damage and loss of lives. It is anything that has an impact unto the environment and livelihoods. Meaning to say, it involves injuries, illnesses, incidents, and close calls/near misses that must be determined for the underlying hazards, their causes, and safety and health program shortcomings. During the 1st quarter course of the 2nd semester, Ms. Landicho made us do numerous activities and worksheets regarding hazard assessments and mapping. From different situations, we collected and reviewed information about the hazards present or likely to be present in that setting. Many hazards can be identified using common knowledge and available tools. For example, we can easily identify and correct hazards associated with broken stair rails and frayed electrical cords. Additionally, we learned to identify foreseeable emergency scenarios and nonroutine tasks, taking into account the types of material and equipment in use and the location within that scenery. We usually encountered scenarios that are foreseeable such as fires and explosions, chemical discharges and spills, lack of maintenance, structural collapse, disease outbreaks, natural disasters, medical emergencies and other workplace violence.

Reflection DISASTER Disasters in actuality are an absolute catastrophe. If not taken seriously from prevention and preparation, expect an even worse aftermaths. Disasters are defined as “serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources.” It was discussed to us that our country has experienced the most natural disasters in this century. It is undoubtedly true because assessing the Philippines geographic location and topography, also considering that it lies along the path of air stream; we are indisputably in most likely to be at risk for natural disasters.

Aside from natural

disasters, we knew during our discussions that we must take into account as well of the occurrence of man-made/ human induced disasters as well. A disaster will turn out to be more catastrophic if not enough preventative measures are observed. Additionally, we were made aware of the various factors to be considered when assessing the vulnerability such as political factors, economic factors, physical factors, social factors and environmental factors. I believe frankly that there are still a lot to be mindful of and plenty more to be discussed thoroughly as regards to disaster. Thus I would like to put forward and suggest that paper works or other worksheets must be reduced somehow and concentrate even more to discussions. Moreover, I would acknowledge the significance of the Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction to be taught in high school in order to continuously promulgate the awareness and help in reducing the vulnerability and risk.

Reflection SAFETY Why is safety an important aspect of our lives to be given a lot attention? Basically, it is because none wants to experience neither injury nor death. All must be fully knowledgeable that any working environment is a potentially dangerous place. Improved safety training and awareness can help save lives and reduce injury. Along with the above mentioned points, about injury and death, there is this imperishable financial impact and oftentimes property damage. I realized that safety is all about taking steps to avoid or reduce risk. It is essential to all workplaces and institutions, especially schools, because it gives assurance; both the people and the institution or the management benefit from the security it gives. But unfortunately for some, safety is one of those things that many of us take for granted until it's too late. Inconsiderate and obstinate students usually have this kind of mindset. After the injury or mishap has happened most of us wish we could have had more instruction on how to stay safe. Because a lot of people do not think before they act. They try to use tools that they are not trained or equipped to use. Employers and the concerned have an obligation to do what they can to provide a safe workplace for employees and others in a place of work. People are not supposed to use certain tools unless they have been trained. They are supposed to wear protective equipment. It is about keeping people and property from harm, as well as minimizing loss, not only of property and people, but also of the knowledge and skills held by their employees. In terms of community safety the same applies on a larger scale. Road safety is a great example. Vehicle engineering, speed limits, road rules are about minimizing loss and the long term impact of injury on individuals and society. Make no mistake, road and workplace and other safety has an impact on costs to society of injury, physical, mental and emotional. Everyone’s main mission of safety is to make sure we go home with the same number of body parts you went to work with.
