DRAFT-Earth Day Visitation Schedule: Friday, April 22, 2016 Penn State Berks Campus Who: Glenside Elementary School 5th Grade Students 42 and 5 adults Teams: G1, G2, G3, G4, H1, H2, H3, H4 (8 teams of 5-6 students each) PSU supports: Tracy Blunt, Mahsa Kazempour, Chrystine Mitchell Glenside Contacts: Melissa Fisher, Andrea Salsano, Student helpers: ● Greeters: Jae, Miguel, Caroline, Celeste, Jennifer, Nikki, Lashawna ● Station leaders/managers: ○

Station 1: bird feeders (Amanda, Jessie, Leigh, and Julia)



Station 2: Sun catchers craft (Marisa, Emily, Marshalin, and Amanda G.)



Station 3: pots & plants (Ryan, Rachel, Tyler, JJ, Natalie, Brittney, Haley)



Station 4: Oil Cleanup Activity: Mike, Katy, Rachel B., Kate



Helpers: Jae, Miguel, Caroline, Celeste, Becca, Nikki, Jennifer Maxwell, Lashawna



Environment task led by: Celeste, Jae, Caroline, Miguel & Dr. Kazempour (other students who are available at that time will be assisting students)



Tour Guides & helpers for both sets of tours: Jae, Miguel, Celeste, Caroline, Ryan, Rachel, Tyler, Kayla, Leidy, JJ, Natalie, Lashawna, Jennifer, Nikki, will be available and will be divided up among student teams



Lunch Ambassadors (Rachel, Tyler, Jae, Miguel, Caroline, Celeste, Becca, Natalie, JJ, Jennifer, Lashawna,)

Idea: Students come to campus and bring something to “share and show” related to Earth Day (a poem, a drawing, a booklet, etc.) Schedule of Events-DRAFT ONLY 8:45 AM PSU faculty & students prepare for Glenside arrival (set up stations, prepare greeting, etc.) 9:00 AM

Depart Glenside Our stations leaders & helpers will organize the stations & prepare everything 9:15 AM Arrival at PSU Berks by bus Greeted by student greeters with a welcome sign and guided to MPR 9:20 AM Travel to Perkins MPR for opening greeting and organizational activities Greeters & others will direct students to their appropriate sections 9:30 AM Opening Activity: 10 minutes ○ Share the “My Penn State Berks Earth Day Visit” booklet and PSU backpacks & clipboards ● Welcome -Safety/ Behavioral Expectations-Build excitement for the day! · Team Building: o Name your team o What do you hope to learn today? o What do you hope you’ll see? · Prompt thinking throughout the day o o Think and record: ● What did I learn? ● What am I wondering about? ● What was my favorite thing? ● How will I help the earth? 9:40-9:50 AM Bathroom Break/ Move to lawn 9:50-10:55 Earth Day Activity Stations · 2 tables per activity (Numbered teams travel together) [G1/H1, G2/H2, etc] · 4 activities of 14 minutes each, with 1-minute transition time between activities 10:55-11:25 Whole group discussion of station activities (5min) Individual task: draw your environment (5min) Team task: Share “environment” drawing & compare/contrast(5min) Whole group discussion of environment (5min) Student Work Sharing (within teams to Penn State reps with each team) - (10min) PSU students collect artifacts to hang in the Plaza Students form groups to walk to Pavilion 11:30-12:10 Station managers clean up stations & leave All walk to Pavilion for lunch Eat then sorting activity with their food waste Lunch/ Bathroom Breaks

Groups form for the tours [Our helpers set up display of Glenside students’ work for everyone to visit during Common Hour - will be a surprise for Glenside students to see their work on display] 12:10-12:50 Walk to Janssen Center area to begin ecological tour Ecological Tour with John Rost at the campus horticulture center · Greenhouse · Honeybee Garden · Bat Houses · Bluebird Houses · Rain Barrels · Labyrinth Walk back to Perkins area 12:55-1:30 Visit to the “Earth Day Expo” and more ● Form 3 teams with each taking turn going to & taking pictures at the following locations (or go freely to three locations within the allotted time): ○ Library (environmental book display, waste display, etc.) ● Perkins area: the Lion statue, the Nittany Lion on the bench, water fountains, & Sustainability Expo stations (about waste, food waste, etc. with prizes, etc. at each) ● Gaige: see the sustainability signs around building, tour of building 1:30-1:45 Meet back at Perkins MPR Wrap-up Small group, then whole group sharing · What did I learn? · What am I wondering about? · What was my favorite thing? · How will I help the earth? Give out PSU memorabilia 1:45 Board busses for Glenside Depart PSU Berks
