Invitation For Inter-University competition in PIEAS

Respected Sir/Madam, Assalam-o-Alikum, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), is regarded as a prestigious institutes of Pakistan. PIEAS offers postgraduate studies to young officers from various Pakistani organizations (PAEC, KRL, NESCOM, PNRA, etc.) it also provides high quality undergraduate studies in the field of computer sciences. In addition to that it also offers PhD programs for engineers and scientists of government and private sector. Within PIEAS, PIEAS Literary Society (PLS) operates with a vision to conduct literary activities alongside the intense academic environment of PIEAS; the activities include essay & story writing, speech & debate, quiz and poetry competitions. PLS has expanded its activities beyond the campus of PIEAS and for the first time in the history of PIEAS in 2004, PLS organized the Inter-University Literary Competition, Expedition 2004. Continuing the tradition, this year, PLS is organizing a third such event, Expedition 2006. And like previous years, this event will include different literary competitions, namely Debates, Essay & Story writing; Quiz Competition, All-Rounder and Sketch and Draw Competition. Details of each competition are attached as Annexes. The PLS team cordially invites you and your university/institute/college to participate in the events of the Expedition 2006. On their part the PLS team will leave no stone unturned in effort to make you feel at home. Your timely response will be highly appreciated. Annex B General Rules 1. No institute/university/college is allowed to participate in any competition with out a senior fellow/teacher as its guardian/supervisor/university representative. 2. Maximum participants from a university/institute/college will be Fourteen (14) plus one supervisor/university representative. 3. Each team will have to send in, the names of participants and supporting documents well before 12th May 2006 (Last Date) in the format attached as Annex H. 4. Participants for debates and essay/story writing and Sketch and Draw Competition can take part in quiz competition and All-Rounder. However participants of urdu debates cannot take part in essay/story competition and participants of English debates cannot take part in Sketch and Draw competition because of simultaneous occurrence of theses events. 5. PIEAS does not offer boarding and lodging for Universities from Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Texila, and Wah Cantt, however each member of the team can be picked and dropped from a specific point and will be brought to PIEAS. Detailed route along with pick and drop points is mentioned in Annex H. 6. Accommodation is limited and will be given on the basis of first come first serve. 7. Event will comprise on 2 days. Competitions will start at 9:00 am and end at 6:00 pm. There will be Refreshment/Prayer breaks during different sessions as mentioned in Annex A. 8. Refreshments will be offered to all guests at specific timing. 9. All members of the team are required to carry their original NIC cards, ID cards of university/ Institution, signed Copies of Annex I and NOC from the Vice Chancellor/ Rector/ Principal of representing university/institution while entering at the gate of PIEAS. 10. Maximum age limit for all the participants in any competition is 27 years before 1st January 2007. 11. Rules for each competition are given in annexes attached. 12. Decision of judges for each competition will be final. However, in case of any dispute, the Rector of PIEAS will give final ruling. 13. The order of the University for the Participation will be set alphabetically. 14. The judges can disqualify any participant in any event, who uses un-parliamentary language, uses personal remarks or use unfair means. 15. All the teams are bound to follow all the rules & regulations announced at the starting time of any event. 16. No TA/DA will be admissible. 17. Every university is bound to participate in at-least three different events & maximally can participate in all five events. Annex C Rules for Debating Competition 1. Debating competition will be bilingual, that is, in Urdu and English. 2. There will be only one topic for debate and discussion, Topic is as follow: English Topic:

3. The contest will separately be held in English & Urdu. 4. The contestants participating in Urdu can also participate in English but single contestant cannot participate in against & in favor of single topic in single language. 5. The evaluation will be based on contents, language & pronunciation, Presentation Style & Oratory. 6. Paper Reading & Consultation of notes is not allowed & will be tantamount towards disqualification. 7. Each university can send up to four participants, two for Urdu and two for English. One member for each language will have to speak against the topic while other will have to speak in favor of the topic. 8. If only two participants participate from any university then one speaker must speak in favor in English, other will have to speak against any of the topic in Urdu or vice versa. 9. Duration of each debate will be from 4 to 5 minutes. First bell will be rung after 4 minutes & second after 5-minutes. On the second bell the speaker shall leave the rostrum. Marks will be deducted in case these limits are violated. 10. Judges will have the full authority to disqualify any speaker. Disqualified person will have to leave the rostrum immediately. 11. Speaker can only discuss the fact but cannot give any comment against any specific Person/Government/National Institutes/Court of Law/Armed Forces/President. 12. The judges can disqualify any participant, who uses un-parliamentary language, uses personal remarks or use unfair means. 13. All the teams are bound to follow all the rules & regulations announced at the starting time of any event.

Annex D Rules For Essay & Story Writing Competition 1. The bilingual essay and story writing competition shall be held in Urdu and English. Both competitions will be held parallel. 2. The invited institutes are requested to prepare two participants minimal and four maximal. Participation in both essay and story writing is a must. 3. Incase of two participants; both will be expected to express in different languages and one for each respective category i.e. story and essay writing. 4. Incase of more than two participants as per defined rule for two participants, additional participants will have an option to choose. 5. The topics of both essays and stories shall be unveiled at the competition. Participants will be free to choose any topic. 6. The evaluation will be based on content, flow, vocabulary, grammar, and originality of ideas. 7. Consultation of any material during the competition is not allowed & will be tantamount towards disqualification. 8. Time for both essay and story writing will be one and a half -hour subjected to requirements can be extended to two hours. 9. No essay should be less than 1000 words and more than 1500 words. 10. Extra time will not be given in any case. 11. Sheets and pens will be provided by PLS. 12. PLS and PIEAS are not responsible for giving copies of writings to their writers in any case.

Annex E Rules For Quiz Competition 3. 4. 5. 6.

Each institute will nominate two members for quiz competition. Competition will be held in English. Quiz competition will be MCQ based, which will consist of three categories. Questions in the rounds will be asked from i. General Knowledge (5-7 Questions) ii. IQ (3-5 Questions) iii. Islam (3-5 Questions) 7. Five questions of general knowledge will be asked from three sections i. Current Affairs ii. General History iii. General Science iv. Pakistan 8. Incase of a tie, the teams will have an extra sudden death round. 9. Response time for each question will be 15 seconds after asking the question. 10. The judges can disqualify any participant, who uses un-parliamentary language, uses personal remarks or use unfair means. 11. All the teams are bound to follow the rules & regulations announced at the starting time of the event. 12. Decision of judges will be final. However, in case of any dispute, the Rector of PIEAS will give final ruling. 13. The order of the university for the participation will be set alphabetically. 14. If more than 15 institutes send their team then preliminary round for the Quiz competition will be arranged on 19th May 2006 one day before the quiz competition. Preliminary round will be MCQ based written round covering the same categories as mentioned above. 15. Questions will be team based, that is no question will be asked from any individual member. 16. Sample for quiz competition is given in Annex E-1.

Annex F Rules for All Rounder 1. Each institute will nominate two members for All Rounder competition. 2. 16 Teams shall be selected to participate in All-Rounder. In case that the number of teams exceeds 16, then a preliminary written test shall be held to select the first 16 teams with the highest scores. 3. The competition will consist of 5 rounds described as follows: •

Visual Round



Kasoty



Dumb Charades



Extempore Speech

4. Bait Bazi itself will consists of the following two rounds •

Verses, which include one specific word given to the competing team. (Any typical word poets usually use in their poetry like “Dil”, “Hijr”, “Wasal” etc. Three words will be given to each team and a time limit of one minute shall be followed.



Verses, which start with one specific Urdu alphabet given to the competing team like “ Alif “ , “bay” etc. Three alphabets will be given to the competing team and a time limit of one minute will be followed.



Evaluation will depend upon the correctness of the verse, its way of delivery, pronunciation, emotional touch, fluency of reading and accent.



Repetition of verses is not allowed.



Verses from songs will not be accepted.



Judges decision will be considered final.

5. Visual Round •

Two Video Clips of duration of about 1 – 2 minutes will be shown to the teams that are on stage

The teams will be required to answer 2 questions each regarding the clips shown



Each question has a response time of 10 seconds.



The decision of the judges will be considered final



No repetition of video on demand of teams is allowed.

6. Kasoti •

Personality, Character, Place or any Man-made construction can be asked.



8-10 options will be displayed to each team playing for this event. Teams will use these options to guess the correct answer.



Correct guess within 4 options will score maximum points.



15 marks per option negative marking will start from 5th option onwards.



Response time for guessing will be two minutes after the team has selected its option.



Judges decision will be considered final incase of any ambiguity.

7. Dumb Charades will proceed as •

A proverb is shown to one member of each team and he/she will act upon silently while the other member has to guess the proverb.



Three such proverbs are to be acted by the participants of each team.



No humming or lip synching is allowed from the acting participant.



Acting and guessing time will be of 1-2 minutes for each team.



Evaluation depends upon the acting skills of the participants, correct guess and guessing within the specified time limit.



Decision of the judges shall be considered final.

8. Extempore Speech •

One member of each team will be given a random topic and will be required to deliver a speech on the topic for a duration of 1 minute and 30 seconds.



2 minutes preparation time shall be given to each team to prepare the speech before its turn to deliver.



A buzzer will sound at the passage of 1 minute and then similarly at the passage of 1 minute and 20 seconds



Negative marking will be carried out once a participant exceeds the time limit

No change of topic on demand by any team is allowed.



Speech is evaluated on the basis of material, accent, pronunciation, delivery, expression and time constraint.



Decision of the judges shall be considered final.



The judges can disqualify any participant, who uses un-parliamentary

language,

uses personal remarks or uses unfair means. 9. All the teams are bound to follow all the rules & regulations announced at the starting time of the event. 10. This is an elimination event, 8 lowest scoring teams will be eliminated after playing for the Bayt Bazi and Video Round. Only the top 8 teams shall play for the Kasoti round, after which another 4 lowest scoring teams shall be eliminated and the remaining 4 teams shall play for the Dumb Charades and Extempore Speech rounds. 11. All the teams are bound to follow all the rules & regulations announced at the start of the event. 12. No arguments shall be entertained on any grounds whatsoever by the PLS. 13. Any team found to be employing unfair-means shall be disqualified immediately. 14. Any team can be disqualified at any stage without prior notice. 15. Rules are subject to change without prior notice. 16. Decision of judges and PLS shall be final and will not be liable to challenge. However, incase of any dispute, the Rector of PIEAS shall give the final ruling.

Annex G Rules for Sketch N’ Draw Competition

1. Each institute will nominate two (2) members for the Sketch and Draw competition. 2. The participants will draw their drawings on the “THEME” provided at the exact time of the competition. 3. The evaluation will be based on the drawing skills, neatness and consistency with the topic given. 4. Participants will be given a duration of 2 hours (only) to draw their drawings. 5. Participants will be provided 2/3 A2 sheets, a pack of Crayons, a pack of colors, 2/3 lead pencils, an eraser and a sharpener by PLS. 6. Drawings should be neat and must be drawn with the accessories provided by the PLS. 7. Consultation with any other member and use of any other unfair mean is not allowed and will be tantamount towards disqualification. 8. Decision of the judges will be final and unquestionable. 9. Extra time will not be given in any case.

Annex J Facilities Provided PIEAS will be providing refreshment and transport facilities to all the participants of expedition 2006 along with the faculty supervisors of each team.
