Film Screening and Panel Discussion: The program features a “preview” from “Child of Giants,” a new documentary by noted filmmaker, Tom Ropelewski. It centers on Dorothea Lange and her impact on American Society, as seen through the eyes of her son, Daniel Dixon. Ropelewski will introduce the film and offer insight into Daniel Dixon’s often difficult, often humorous relationship with this icon of photography. Segments also include interviews with photographers Rondal Partridge and Christina Gardner, who worked intimately in the field with Lange. Panel Participants: John Dixon (Dorothea Lange’s son), Meg Partridge (Rondal Partridge’s daughter), and Filmmaker Tom Ropelewski. Dorothea Lange ‘s images from The Great Depression, Asia, Egypt and Ireland combine a sense for the camera with empathy for the subject. “The human face”, she said “is the universal language”. Her strong convictions and commitment to excellence greatly influenced those around her. Ron Partridge and Ruth-Marion Baruch’s work in this exhibition reflect this influence. Rondal Partridge has spent the last seventy years photographing subjects as diverse as the changing face of Yosemite, rodeos, flea markets, portraits and still life subjects. Born into a thriving community of artists, Partridge is the son of Imogen Cunningham, and former assistant to Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams. His eye for the photograph is complemented by his talent for platinum and silver gelatin printing. Ruth-Marion Baruch’s photographic career was at the center of the vibrant California school of photography that included luminaries such as Lange, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Baruch’s husband, Pirkle Jones. She was the first woman to complete a graduate degree in photography; her thesis explored the work of Edward Weston. Lumière will feature work from her series Walnut Grove, Illusion for Sale and Haight-Ashbury.
