Teacher state the space inside a rectangle is area.
Students are devided into a group of 3, Each group is provided with the 3 color cards and some squre chips (1x1). Students try to cover the cards with chips. Procedure 1 (10 min)
Area of a rectangle is number of square chips Questions which form the rectangle 1. Which card need the most chips to cover? 2. Which card have the bigger size? 3. How you find the area of a rectangle? Teacher lead students to infer area is equal to the numbers of chips which cover the rectangle.
Each group is provided with worksheet A and the sqore chips and few color cards.
Procedure 2 (20 min)
Students cover the 1st card with chips. Area of a rectangle is Students count the length and breadth of the card number of square chips Students repeat same steps for other cards. which form the rectangle Students record the area, length and breadth of the cards in the work sheet A. Fill the last column by finding the product of LxB Questions 1. Any relationship show by the table? 2. What is the relationship between total numbers of chips to cover and the product of LxB? Teacher lead students to infer area is equal to length x breadth.

Learning & Teaching Activities Each group is provided with worksheet B ,ruler and an envelope, an exersice book, a text book.
Procedure 3 (20 min)
Each group measure the length and breadth of the objects and record it in the work sheet B. Calculate the area by using the formula they derive Calculate area of objects from procedure 2 and fill in work sheet B. by using the formula Each group present their results. Teacher give comments Challeging Question How to make sure the area calculated is correct? Cover the objects by chips and compare.
Closure (5 min)
Formula : Area of rectangle
Students are asked to give the formula. Students are asked to answer orally what is the area of few ractangles ( length & breadth is given)
