AREA AND PERIMETER OF RECTANGLE

AREA The area of a figure measures the size of the region enclosed by the figure. This is usually expressed in terms of some square unit. A few examples of the units used are square meters, square centimeters, square inches, or square kilometers.

PERIMETER The perimeter of a polygon is the sum of the lengths of all its sides.

RECTANGLE Rectangle, quadrilateral (four-sided plane figure) with opposite sides equal and parallel and with each interior angle a right angle (90°). Its area A is the product of the length l and height h; that is, A = l x h. A rectangle with four equal sides is a square. The diagonals of a rectangle are equal and bisect each other.

FIGURE OF RECTANGLE

Area of a Rectangle The area of a rectangle is the product of its width and length. This color shows the area of rectangle.

Example 1: What is the area of a rectangle having a length of 6 and a width of 2.2?

SOLUTION The area is the product of these two side lengths, which is 6 × 2.2 = 13.2.

Example 2: What is the area of a rectangle having a length of 9 and a width of 7.2?

SOLUTION The area is the product of these two side lengths, which is 9 × 7.2 = 64.8.

PERIMETER OF RECTANGLE

The perimeter is the distance around a closed plane figure. The perimeter, P, of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w) where l is the length and w is the width of the rectangle.

EXAMPLE 1: What is the perimeter of a rectangle having side-lengths of 3.4 m and 8.2 m?

SOLUTION Since a rectangle has 4 sides, and the opposite sides of a rectangle have the same length, a rectangle has 2 sides of length 3.4 m, and 2 sides of length 8.2 m. The sum of the lengths of all the sides of the rectangle is 3.4 + 3.4 + 8.2 + 8.2 = 23.2 m.

EXAMPLE 2: Find the perimeter of a rectangular field of length 45 m and width 35 m.

SOLUTION • So, the perimeter is 160 m.
