Discrimination and Back-up Protection Introduction It is not the performance of an individual component that determines the reliability of a low-voltage system, but rather the “teamwork” of all such components. Optimal cooperation of switching devices depends on discriminative line and device protection. Each feeder and each device must be protected as well as possible against overload and short-circuit, without being adversely affected by any switching operations
intended to protect the rest of the system.

When a system is planned, it is customary to select protective devices with breaking capacities to suit the maximum possible short-circuit currents at the points of installation.
This means in practical terms that at a point in the distribution system with a possible shortcircuit current of e.g. 50 kA, a cost-effective protective device with a breaking capacity of only 20 kA can also be used, entailing however other advantages (e.g. less space required and better protection), if it is given back-up protection by an upstream device with a breaking capacity of at least 50 kA.

Discrimination and Back-up Protection Discrimination In series-connection of circuitbreakers, protection against overload and short-circuit is referred to as “discriminative” if, in the direction of power flow, only that device upstream of the fault is tripped. Current discrimination With overload, the discrimination can be worked out from a comparison of the time/current characteristics. With shortcircuit, this comparison produces values that are too low. The reason for this is the behaviour of the releases in the event of short-circuit currents, which deviates from the behaviour in the long-time range, i.e. in the event of overload (Fig. 12/1). With adequately different short-circuit currents at the installation points of two circuitbreakers, the instantaneous short-circuit releases can generally be set so that in the event of short-circuit after the downstream switch, only the latter operates. With almost identically high short-circuit currents at the installation points of the circuitbreakers, grading of the operating currents of the short-circuit releases allows discrimination only up to a certain short-circuit current. This current is referred to as the discrimination limit.

The limit values for discrimination are shown in the tables on Pages 12/6 to 12/29. If the value worked out from the short-circuit calculation (e.g. to DIN VDE 0102) at the installation point of the downstream switch lies below the discrimination limit read off from the table for the chosen combination, discrimination is assured for all possible short-circuit
occurrences at the installation point. If the short-circuit current worked out at the installation point lies above the discrimination limit, discriminative tripping by the downstream switch is assured only up to the value in the table. The planner must assess whether the value can be considered adequate, as the probability of, for example, the
maximum short-circuit current occurring is low. Otherwise a switch combination must be selected, with a discrimination limit higher than the maximum short-circuit current.

Discrimination and Back-up Protection Current discrimination, time discrimination 3VF current-limiting circuitbreakers for distribution system protection to IEC 60 947 The 3VF circuit-breakers are available in various shortcircuit breaking capacities. To eliminate the need to create a table for every breaking capacity where the discrimination limit is dependant on the breaking capacity, the discrimination limit is given in the sequence e.g. 40/70/100 kA. The corresponding value is dependant upon the breaking capacities of the upstream and downstream breakers. Decisive is always the smallest value. Upstream circuit-breaker

Time discrimination Another method of assuring discrimination in the event of almost identically high shortcircuit currents at the installation points is time discrimination. The upstream breaker requires time-delay short-circuit releases, so that in the event of a fault only the downstream breaker isolates the part of the system affected by the fault.
Both the release delays and the operating currents of the shortcircuit releases are graded. In order to avoid undesirably long tripping times with seriesconnection of several circuitbreakers, SIEMENS has developed microprocessor-driven „short-time grading control“ (ZSS) for the 3WN/3WS circuitbreakers.

Function: A short-circuit at point K1 is sensed by Q4, Q2 and Q1. When the „ZSS“ is activated, Q1 and Q2 are temporarily blocked by Q4 and Q2 respecttively. As Q4 receives no blocking signal, it trips after 10 ms.
A short-circuit at point K2 is sensed only by Q1; as Q1 receives no blocking signal, it trips after 50 ms. Without „ZSS“, tripping would not take place until after 150 ms.

Discrimination and Back-up Protection Back-up protection When a circuit-breaker or miniature circuit-breaker is selected, it is mandatory that the breaker is able to handle the shortcircuit current at the installation point, either on its own or with the assistance of an upstream protective device (back-up protection). This means that by virtue of the back-up protection, the breaking capacity of the downstream breaker is allowed to be lower than the shortcircuit current at the installation point. This represents a degree of planning freedom, which makes above all for economical system design and also optimizes component protection. The tables on pages 12/30 and 12/31 show the increased permissible short-circuit currents for all breaker combinations, made possible by back-up protection. Appraisal of the back-up protection for the circuit-breakers to IEC 60 947-2 and for the miniature circuit-breakers according to IEC 60 898 was based on the breaking capacity test with test sequence Icu, acc. to IEC 60 947-2.

In 240/415 V, 50 Hz networks the discrimination limits must be reduced by 10%. The discrimination values for the upstream circuit-breakers apply for adjustable releases at maximum setting. The corresponding value is dependant on the breaking capacities of the upstream and downstream breakers (See page 12/4).
