3.H MEMO FOR RECORD:

16 September 2001

THE LOGISTICS GROUP STORY... For the two weeks prior to the September 11th attacks, the unit was deployed for a Red Flag Training Exercise at Nellis AFB, Nevada. Nine jets, configured "air-to ground" with no ammo were re-deployed on Saturday, 8 September 2001. Monday, 10 September, was a scheduled day off for the 113th Wing. On the morning of 11 September 2001, we were flying a "normal" training day. We were flying three air-to-ground training sorties to the NAVY DARE range in North Carolina. Our jets were in-bound to Andrews when they were told to RTB as fast as possible (Scheduled land time was 1045). At 1010 we received word to "Get something up". When "Testy" landed, he was asked what his fuel status was and then was instructed to take off again and head towards Washington D.C. to intercept possible additional commercial aircraft Like the one that had just struck the Pentagon. With the two jets that landed, we quickly-turned them while WRM assets were being delivered to the flightline, and prepared two more jets to give us a total of four air-to-air configured F-16's . The second two were loaded with "live" (WRM) AIM-9M missiles. We launched 2 air-to-air configured jets ("Sass" & "Lucky") with "hot guns" (TP Ammo only). The time was approximately 1015. Then we launched two more airto-air's approximately 20 minutes later ("Raz'in" & "Igor") with 2 live AIM-9s each and "hot gun" (TP Ammo). At 1030, we began to tow all air-to-ground configured jets to taxiway "Echo" and loaded them with two live AIM-9M's each. By 1100 we were ready to launch 4 more jets. We flew 17 sorties (total) on 11 Sep 01 (56.1 hours). We began 24 hour operations @ 1300 11 Sep 01.

NCT0038277
