Much research has recently focused on how antioxidant vitamins may reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Antioxidant vitamins — E, C and beta carotene (a form of vitamin A) — have potential health-promoting properties. Though the data are incomplete, up to 30 percent of Americans are taking some form of antioxidant supplement. AHA Scientific Position The American Heart Association doesn't recommend using antioxidant vitamin supplements until more complete data are available. We continue to recommend that people eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods daily from all the basic food groups.Eating a variety of foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol will provide a natural source of these vitamins, minerals and fiber. Background Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad") cholesterol is important in the development of fatty buildups in the arteries. This process, called atherosclerosis, can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Until recently, it was thought that LDL cholesterol lipoprotein oxidation and its biological effects could be prevented by using antioxidant supplements. However, more recent clinical trials have failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect of antioxidant supplements. Some studies even suggest that antioxidant supplement use could have harmful effects. Using dietary supplements of antioxidants to prevent cardiovascular disease should not be recommended until their effect is proved in clinical trials that directly test their impact on CVD end points. Beneficial effects must be demonstrated in well designed (randomized, placebo-controlled) clinical trials before recommending widespread use to prevent cardiovascular disease. At this time, the scientific evidence supports a diet high in food sources of antioxidants and other heart-protecting nutrients, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts instead of antioxidant supplements to reduce risk of CVD.

We have all been down the road of training on something over and over, yet not quite picking it up. You keep telling yourself, “It’s not that hard, why do I keep screwing up?” These words lead us into that little dark place where we’re met by none other than doubt. Doubt greets us with a crooked grin and then a full blown toothy smile after we accept his invitation into wallowing in what we consider a failure. Doubt can come in several forms, but it comes mainly when you aren’t feeling good enough or have failed at something. It’s easy to allow the criticism of others to take hold of you and bring you down low, fracturing your confidence in the things you know or skills you truly have. Having this doubt can surely kill you in a situation where confidence is the key to survival. If you begin to doubt your abilities, knowledge, skill, teachings, and anything you’ve ever experienced, you will doubt yourself in a critical time and that isn’t something you need or truly want. You need to be sure of yourself and all the skills, mental, physical, and spiritual, that you’ve learned to defend yourself to the utmost of your ability. Doubt has a way of destroying that type of confidence which will be costly. If you doubt yourself in any sport you won’t do as well because you already mentally defeated yourself, but in sports you won’t get yourself killed, unless you’re doing something extremely dangerous, and even then you could die. By the time the words, “I can’t” or “I’m not that good” or the plain and simple, “I suck!” Enters your mind you’re already 70% beaten. Your mind sends signals to your body, and if you the negative words come in your body will react with that negativity. Doubt beats you before the physical part even takes place. If you doubt your skills and knowledge you won’t fight as hard, if at all, and your mind will be merely thinking, those negative words putting you low and you’ll want to lose. By that time you’re already defeated, and you can’t afford to be defeated in a life-or-death situation. In those situations doubt will get you killed.
Break away from your doubt of you skill, and if you fail at something well guess what, SURPRISE, you’re human. We’re imperfect beings that are fallible in many aspects. Don’t use your failures or difficult times to put yourself down, instead use them as stepping stones to get over the larger hurdle in your path. Keep a positive mindset and don’t allow critics or nay-sayers put you into a negative thought pattern. Your true character shows when you fail and get back up and continue to put effort into working on obvious weakness. We learn more by failing than by successful all the time. Don’t allow doubt to put you on the path to death, if you lack the confidence to defend yourself or your loved ones because you failed at something, well guess what, you just failed again. You can’t correct failure with failure. We’re not perfect, so don’t let the doubt of not being perfect creep in and hurt your chances for survival.

Here are some of the folks that attended The 1st Annual SABRINA PINA SELF DEFENSE Seminar! We at D.G.C. Reality Based Martial Arts wish to thank all the people that made this all possible and too all those that came to the seminar to learn a VERY EFFECTIVE SYSTEM of Self Defense. Here is some of the articles that were written about Sabrina Pina and the seminar.
Women learn self-defense in honor of Sabrina Piña Two abductions inspire women to learn to fight By JENNIFER LEAHY Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle
Vanessa Washington and her husband first talked about personal safety after Susana De Jesus was abducted from a Pearland parking lot near their home Feb. 2. “We tried to figure out if you’re statistically more likely to win the lottery or be abducted. I’m pretty sure it’s abducted,” Washington said. Weeks later, those odds seemed to increase when Washington’s Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority sister, 27-year-old Sabrina Piña, was killed after being kidnapped from a busy suburban shopping center. Washington, her 53-year-old mother, her friend and her sister-in-law spent a few hours Saturday learning self-defense at an event organized as a tribute to Piña. “It really gets the emotion going again, makes me think of what she went through and wondering if she could’ve maybe gotten away,” Washington said. ‘Evade and escape’ More than 100 participants learned how to disarm attackers during the free seminar. “An attack can happen in a heartbeat, and you don’t have to have years of training to survive it — just the techniques and the willingness to use them,” said Malvin Traylor of Dark Gift Combat. Traylor and his staff demonstrated a number of techniques designed to buy victims a few seconds. “That’s all it takes to get away. You’re not looking to stay engaged; you’re just wanting to get away — evade and escape,” said Traylor. He and his staff volunteered their time and facility after a friend of Piña’s who trains at Dark Gift Combat approached them. Sami Shbeeb, 30, spent the afternoon as an attacker. Clad in protective gear, including a plastic screen over his face, he was repeatedly hit, kicked and scratched when people practiced their newfound skills. He also executed a few stealth attacks in the crowd. “Anything can happen at anytime,” Traylor said. That’s reality, organizers said, is one of the reasons for the event. “Raising awareness, especially among women, is one of the good things that can come from Sabrina’s death,” said Ingrid Diaz. ‘Have to be vigilant’ Piña’s friends, family, and members of Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority and Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity also held a barbecue fundraiser at the site, with all proceeds going to the memorial youth fund at Piña’s church. “We want to not only honor her, but also to remind people, especially women, that they always have to be vigilant,” said event coordinator Guillermo Suarez. Mirella Roman said she’d never given much thought to how she would defend herself before Saturday’s seminar. “You never think something like this is going to happen to you, and I bet Sabrina never thought it would happen to her,” Roman said.“Everyone should take a class like this.”

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM THOSE WHO WOULD HARM YOU! A SELF DEFENSE SEMINAR! Following the horrific murder of 27-yearold Sabrina Pina, the Latino student community of Houston area sorority and fraternities, Sigma Lambda Gamma and Sigma Lambda Beta will hold a self defense seminar and fundraiser event to raise awareness for the prevention of violent crimes towards women, and to honor their fellow organization member Sabrina Tolentino-Pina. The Sabrina Pina self defense seminar will be held on March 7, 2009 at the DGC Reality Based Martial Arts Center located at 7427 Southwest Freeway from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The self defense seminar will teach one hundred women basic self defense techniques provided by five martial arts instructors and will serve as a stepping stone for the prevention of violent crimes against women. “All of our Houston area organizations came together for the sole intent of generating a positive event in remembrance of our beloved member Sabrina Pina-Tolentino,” said Ingrid Diaz, Sigma Lambda Gamma member and Houston Metropolitan Alumni Association president. “By initiating this event we are hoping to tackle the issue of violent crimes against women by hosting a defense seminar in which women will be able to learn techniques on how to defend themselves. We will also be holding a fundraiser event where proceeds will be donated to the Sabrina Pina-Tolentino Memorial foundation.” The fundraising event will to be held simultaneously, where organization members will be selling food plates and accepting donations where all proceeds will benefit the Sabrina Pina-Tolentino Memorial Foundation. This foundation was established as a memorial for Pina and benefits the youth ministries office. Fundraiser is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pina was last seen shopping at an area shopping center on Saturday February 21, 2009. According to investigators, Pina was abruptly abducted in broad day light by an alleged former high school classmate. Pina’s body was later discovered dead in an area ditch where she appeared to have been shot in the head. Pina was a graduate of the University of Texas and was an active member in Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority. After moving to Houston, Pina resumed her activities in the Houston Metropolitan Alumni Association. “Following this tragic loss, all of our members feel it is our duty to uphold the values instilled by each of our organizations,” says Guillermo Suarez, Sigma Lambda Beta member and head coordinator of the fundraising effort. “We cannot change the past of this tragic episode, but we have taken it upon ourselves to help change the future, and help women not fall victims to violent situations.”

Is C.H.L. a Magic Wand? I saw these comments on a forum; I will agree a CONCELD HAND GUN LICENCE is a GREAT thing to have BUT it is NOT the MAGIC WAND! They need to add a gun. Yes a gun! A gun is way ahead of your hands and feet. Look I'm a fairly high ranking Tae Kwon Do black belt and a Krav Maga practitioner, BUT the gun is way ahead of using your hands and feet. Trust me. 10 hours of range time with a gun will give you far more protection than 10 hours of H2H. As long as you keep track of your surroundings and can spot indictors of trouble coming, the gun is way ahead. The handgun is not called the 'Great Equalizer' for nothing. One needs to be extremely proficient with hand-to-hand to employ it effectively. Proficient meaning practicing for many, many hours a week for years, in order to be effective in a street-attack scenario. A firearm is much more forgiving. A solid weekend-long defensive pistol course along with an hour or two of practice on the weekends afterward is a lot more beneficial - not to mention fun. C.H.L. is NOT a MAGIC WAND!! SO you do get a C.H.L. now what 25 hours of target practices!! GREAT you now know how to shoot a paper target!! but can you pull your weapon under duress did you get tactical shooting lesson or close quarters combat shooting, How about weapon retention? NO? Well then you HAVE A BIGGER PROBLEM. How about you miss the attacker and hit the lady across the street?!!! WOW did not see that one coming. LOOK I have been in the Martial arts for over 35 + years, I now teach Reality Based Martial Arts & Combatives, I teach folks from soccer moms to special operation teams all around the world. A gun is not the answer but its a start, learning self defense is not the answer but it is also a start. one needs a combination of hand gun training, Tactical shooting , close quarters combat shooting ,Hand to Hand combat. And folks that is the plain TRUTH.. Any one that says JUST GET A C.H.L. and call it a day does not have a clue and about trying to pull your weapon under duress, You have to have combat shooting training and close quarters combat shooting and gun retention along with hand to hand combat training. Mr.Traylor

I have a weapon… so I’m good. Unfortunately this is too often the thought process with a weapon carrying individual, no matter what the weapon is, the thought is the same; I have a weapon to equalize the odds … so I’m good. Never coming to the realization that you might actually have to get to your weapon and deploy it and more often than not this will be under stress in a force on force scenario. How many times have you seen someone, let’s just say someone who is not of the male persuasion, carry mace or pepper spray in their purse buried under numerous items where it would take a search and rescue team to recover it. Do you really think while being stabbed, beaten or shot at by an aggressor who only has ill intent that this person will be able to access this item for a Mr. Marks has 18 years defensive counter measure? Maybe, but I think not? Then there’s the guy that experience teaching and has a gun for home defense but has it locked away through more layers of training in various martial security than the Pentagon. Again, is this easily accessible in a moments systems Inside D.G.C.F.S. notice? If there is a home invasion how fast can he be weapon ready? Now how about a conceal carry situation is the weapon positioned for easy access? Sabrina Pina seminar 1 If you’ve been ambushed by a thug with a knife treating you like a sweater on Ronald’s Fitness Corner 2 your grandma’s sewing machine can you deploy your weapon? I don’t know Coming events 3 Doubt can Kill 4 about you but as your being stabbed repeatedly is probably not a good time to Airsoft Products 5 start your preparation for what you would do in this situation but, that’s just Cont.Sabrina Pina seminar 6 Is C.H.L. a magic Wanda? 10 me I’m funny that way. So basically you need to play with the idea of weapon I have a weapon I am good 11 positioning and what is functional for you, your attributes, and your body Good places to go 12 type. For example if you’re a Fatty Mcfatty like myself you will have a hard time with a weapon draw from an appendage carry due to guess what….stomach size. Even though finding center line under stress is quite easy as your hands tend to find it naturally I can not make it functional for me. Had I not explored this through the trial and error process of training I would have attempted this in a real world encounter with dire consequences. So what you really need to do is address how and where you carry while applying deployment strategies as someone pretty much beats the shit out of you. This accomplishes two things, first you know what is or is not accessible for you in real time and second, it let’s you know that getting the shit beat out of you kind of sucks. This is a good starting point and as I don’t want to divulge all my secrets just yet we will leave it at that for the time being. These are but a few examples to show that carrying a weapon is not necessarily the be all to end all resolution to self defense. Believe it or not there is some work involved. My point is really this: if you have a weapon you must train to get to that weapon, it will not magically appear in your hand. You will also need to train doing this under stress in as many conflict scenarios’ you can dream up so that you will not falter in the heat of battle. Only then can you be prepared, well somewhat anyways. By: Rob Marks Rob Marks has 18 years experience teaching and training in various martial systems: Close Quarters Combat, Defensive Tactics, I.M.P.A.C.T. Method, Jeet Kune Do, Kali, O.F.T, R.A.T., Reality Based Combatives, S.A.B.E.R. Method, Silat, SOG, Weapons Tactics, and Wing Chun.
