Design of Assembly Just because you can make something doesn’t mean you can manufacture it

Assembly 

Assembly means assemble individual components into the final product The Last Step in Manufacturing Process The auxiliary work needed during and after production.

Importance DFA

For every product part, there are about 1000 manufacturing equipment parts

Related to DFM, but focuses specifically on the aspect of manufacturing in which the system is put together

Reduce costs, simplify processes

Types Of Assembly   

Manual Assembly Mechanically Aided Manual Assembly Automatic Assembly  

Special Synchronous Machines and Automatic Feeders Special Non Synchronous Machines and Automatic Feeders Special purpose free Transfer Non Synchronous Machines Robots and Parts Magazines

Factors Considered In Assembly Type The decision between manual and Automatic assembly depends on such factors are, The No. of parts per Assembly  The no. of Assemblies Required  The Design / Complexity of the component  Relative cost of Capital and Labour 

Operations involved in DFA

Storing Handling Positioning Joining Adjusting Securing Inspecting

Guidelines for Assembly Layout An easy-to-assemble layout can be achieved if the assembly operations are:  Structured  Reduced  Standardized  Simplified.

Designing Assembly Interfaces

Improvements to the interfaces are achieved if they are  Reduced  Standardized  simplified.

Designing Interface Elements To improve automatic storage and handling, including the identification, ordering, picking-up and moving of the interfacing elements, these operations should be  Enabled  Simplified

Guidelines For Assembly Improvement Standardize Design  Use Subassemblies  Avoid Too many Subassembly at a time  Use layered top down Assembly  Design Parts to be self aligning  Eliminate Adjustments as much as Possible  Use Funnel Shaped Openings of holes / slots 

Contd., Use over sized holes in through holes of mating Parts  Use Push on Fasteners instead of Threaded type  Use fewer larger fasteners instead of Larger no. of Small fasteners  When Design Allowed Use open End slot instead of Closed / Holes  When allowed Use Rigid part as Base 

Thank you
