Learning Content: Subject Matter: Interpreting pictograph BEC PELC V-A 1.2 Skills: Interpreting pictograph Reading and Writing the legend in the pictograph References: Textbooks: Power in Math p.190, Mathematics for Everyday Use pp.232234( Dane Publishing House), Todays Math 3 pp. 279-282 Materials: colored paper strips, examples of pictographs, Manila paper, activity sheets, mini board. Values: Cooperation III. Learning Experiences A. Preparatory Activities 1. Drill (The teacher will use a clock for this activity while pupils will use their mini board to write their answer.) Write the time.

1. Review Children, we have discussed the parts of the pictograph yesterday. Let us recall what are the parts of the pictograph. (Show a sample of a pictograph). Let the pupils label the parts of the pictograph using the strips. Pupils Favorite Colors Title Violet Blue Green Orange Label Yellow Red Legend Pink Legend:

3. Motivation Who among you like to watch TV? What is your favorite TV show? Would you like to know how many pupils like to watch your favorite show also? Let’s find out?

Tell the pupils that this is a graph using pictures. It is called picture graph or pictograph. Let the children look at the graph and ask them to answer the questions orally. Questions: 1. What is the title of the graph? 2. How many pupils does it picture represent? 3. Which TV show is the most favorite of the pupils? 4. Which TV show is the least favorite of the pupils? 5. Which TV shows have the same number of pupils watched? b. Analysis of other examples: Here is a graph of Mayumi’s savings for a week. (Show another pictograph) Mayumi’s Savings for one week Days Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Legend:

Questions: 1. How much money did she save on Tuesday? 2. Which day did she save the most? 3. Which day did she save the least? 4. How much more money did she save on Friday than on Wednesday? 5. How much money did she save for five school days?

c. Boys Vs. Girls Activity Teacher will present a graph on the board. The boys and girls group will look at the graph and interpret it in their lines, when the teacher gives the “Go”signal.

They’re going to answer the questions about the pictograph as fast as they can. The first team/group who finish first and got most of the correct answer win the game. 2. Guided Practice a. Group Activities The class will be divided in 3 Groups. Each group will be given an envelope with pictograph inside. They’re going to analyze and answer the questions based from the pictograph. The leader or representative of each group will present their work b. Presentation of their works. 3. Generalization What is a pictograph? What helped us interpret the pictograph? Pictograph is a pictorial representation of data. Legend helps us to interpret a pictograph. .

C. Application Each pupil will be given an activity sheet containing pictograph. They’re going to answer the questions about the graph and the first one who will submit his activity sheet and got all of the correct answer will win the game. V. Evaluation Study the graph. Then answer the questions.
