The United States of America is the world's largest economy and also the most influential political power in the world. What the US does almost always affects the rest of the world. All of us are pretty helpless when the ripples come our way. Remember the first AIDS outbreak in San Francisco in early 1982? One gay man, an employee in the US travel industry, wrote the death warrants for millions of people around the world and even today the scourge is still undefeatable. Remember how senior Bush cornered the UN Security Council to enable his country to wage war on Iraq ? One fateful step led to another, and the Iraqi people were eventually reduced to living human wrecks as a result of very crippling sanctions and constant air strikes ( carried out supposedly to enforce UN-mandated no-fly zones ). Osama decided to strike one almighty blow on behalf of the poor people of Iraq and his unforgettable action led to the "either you are with us or you are not with us" ultimatum. Countries rushed to send soldiers to where the action was, and the result was many more innocent civilians killed, both on the disparate battlefields as well as in places like inside public trains, city streets where foreign embassies were located and public places like markets and restaurants. Many governments tabled rushed laws and arrests of minority groups became common. People wearing certain attire were at risk of being identified as undesirables and a few were actually assaulted or murdered. Senior Bush's personal crusade was to be fate being unavoidably greater than the will for many, many people around the world. Today, now, the excesses of super powerful speculators and the people belonging to the shadowy profession known as shortsellers have caused Godzilla economic tsunamis to ride round the world. Numerous nameless, faceless people have become penniless, made bankrupt and driven to suicide. All kinds of people everywhere have lost their jobs, their life savings and their future. The light at the end of the tunnel is definitely not near yet. Crime will be the winner, despair will be the companion and people will say "deja vu once more, thank you, Uncle Sam!" It is most ironic that a nation, which proclaims itself the Defender of freedom, dispenses misery, even death, to the rest of the hapless world on a very regular basis.
