December 2009 Together—Transforming—Tomorrow
A Message
from Dr. Loeb, Medical Staff President We all have a corner of the world that we can transform. Every day, as physicians, we have the opportunity to have a significant impact on the lives of our patients. This has been my focus for the last 26 years in medical practice. Four years ago when I told my husband that I wanted to run for Medical Staff President he asked me, “Why?” I told him Barbara Loeb, M.D. beyond my usual work, I wanted to have the opportunity to do something new and creative that would inspire me. I wanted to serve in a role that could help make the hospital a better place for our physicians and their patients. I realized that this also included creating great relationships with nurses, staff and administration, where we all would be a collaborative team. With the partnership of our medical staff, nursing staff and proactive administration we have been able to do exactly that. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital has not only won numerous awards but it has become an increasingly physician-centric environment. This is my final letter for the Physician Forum and I will miss the opportunity to write about health care and the world today. What I leave you with is a celebration of all the wonderful things we do every day here at Good Samaritan Hospital. I encourage every member of the Medical Staff to step forward and get more involved with the hospital and your departments. Attend meetings and educational events. Volunteer for committees and projects. Run for office to give your valuable input into areas that improve the quality of our work environment and care we give to our patients. It is an opportunity to grow as a physician and leader. I have benefited and grown in numerous ways by participating. In your clinical practices, concentrate on being present and attentive to your patients. You will find that whatever you do
in life, it is more rewarding and inspiring when you are fully immersed in it. It has been a true honor and pleasure to serve you. The people I owe thanks to are too numerous to list but my gratitude to all of you is infinite. As I transition into the role of past president, I will continue to support our excellent journey. I would like to take the liberty of sharing a quote that Dave Fox shared with me from Jim Collins’ book, “Good to Great:” “When all these pieces come together, not only does your work move towards greatness, but so does your life. For, in the end, it is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful one. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work. Perhaps, then, you might gain that rare tranquility that comes from knowing that you’ve had a hand in creating something of intrinsic excellence that makes a contribution. Indeed, you might even gain that deepest of all satisfactions: knowing that your short time here on this earth has been well spent, and that it mattered.” In Gratitude, Barbara Loeb, M.D.

Health Outcomes
Patients’ pain management perceptions changing in Unit 43 Oncology Department Unit 43 nurses at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital are succeeding in improving results in patient satisfaction surveys regarding the patients’ perception of pain management. The staff used pain management “Best Practices” from multiple sources to formulate a plan for improvement that has exceeded its goal each quarter since being implemented. The goal of the 65th percentile was set to have patients answer “always” to two indicator questions: 1) How often was your pain controlled and, 2) How often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain. Changes made include implementing Cathy Wahlen as a point person for pain, focusing on specific pain documentation when completing monthly chart audits, highlighting audit results to staff and having discussions with RNs who are in non-compliance. A continued action plan includes having the staff audit pain protocols on a monthly basis. It also included peer education by a pain buddy on the unit; discussion in staff meetings and unit-based shared governance meetings; leadership rounding regarding pain control; specific techniques and questions for hourly rounding reviewed at PCA skills day with RNs; pain issues discussed at huddles and a Pain Clinical Nurse Specialist to do in-service for all staff due to increased number of new staff members.

New imaging center in Woodridge Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital opened a new outpatient facility in October for imaging services. With the opening of the Woodridge location, Good Samaritan Hospital now has four outpatient centers. The newest facility, located at 7530 Woodward Ave. in Woodridge, provides imaging services for digital screening mammography, CT, DEXA (bone density), X-ray and Ultrasound. Physicians can direct patients to the Outpatient Center via central scheduling at 630-275-APPT (2778). Map cards and RX pads are being distributed so physicians can direct patients to each of the four Outpatient Centers.

On the Move The Pathology Department completed the third and final phase of a three-year project when the pathologists moved into their new offices Oct. 1. The offices, located across the hall from their old location, provide a larger and
quieter space that improves functionality. It also provides the pathologists with easier access to the clinical and histological labs, and closer proximity to the OR suites.

OCTOBER 2009 = 57,905 Total CPOE Thank you to all of our Physicians, NPs and PAs for achieving and exceeding our Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital goal for CPOE. CPOE has contributed to better patient outcomes for our patients. The orders are processed immediately and decreases turnaround time for the ordering of medications, lab and diagnostic imaging. Order Set utilization has also increased and their utilization leads to “Best Practices” through technology. Thank you for your support of our journey from “Good to Great” with CPOE! Clinical Informatics contact For CPOE training, please contact Mary Ziegler, R.N., at ext. 31-1414.
MVP Nominations Dr. Aheed Siddiqi
Physician Engagement
Partnership submitted by the Nuclear Medicine Department “Dr. Siddiqui consistently demonstrates partnership throughout the Radiology department. He is always willing to answer a question or look at a study even if he is in the middle of something else or assigned to a different modality. He truly puts the patient’s needs first. He uses all resources available to diagnose patients in a timely manner, even if the study is one that is infrequently performed. Dr. Siddiqui is kind to both patients and staff. His sunny disposition makes him a joy to work with.”
About your colleagues… Dr. Robert Battista recently edited the August 2009 edition of the Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, “Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy for Benign Skull Base Tumors.” He also wrote a chapter in the same Clinics, entitled, “Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Vestibular Schwannoma.”
Bariatric program receives prestigious designation Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital landed a unique commendation when it earned designation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®. Across the nation there are 383 certified hospitals and 653 surgeons, including two at Good Samaritan – Dr. Jeffery Rosen and Dr. Alan Mikhail. The program works in conjunction with LifeWeigh Bariatrics in Downers Grove. LifeWeigh Bariatrics is a multidisciplinary program that specializes in weight loss surgery. “This is a testimonial to the deep commitment that we have toward the care of the severely obese patients,” said Dr. Rosen, who was appointed director of the bariatric program in July. “I feel this opens a doorway for more patients that need help in lifestyle changes and surgery for weight loss surgery.”

Volunteerism and philanthropy are cornerstone values for any hospital. And nobody exemplifies them better at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital than Bob and Betsy Holland, and Dick and Pat Mochel. The couples were honored at the French Quarter Ball on Nov. 7 as this year’s Good Samaritans of the Year. The event, held at the Westin Hotel in Lombard, raised more than $300,000 for the hospital. Bob and Betsy Holland have been an integral part of our community, giving their time and resources to improve not only Good Samaritan Hospital, but Downers Grove, as well. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the Holland’s son Kenneth, who passed away following a tragic automobile accident. The couple took the most horrific life event that could happen to their family and turned it into something encouraging by keeping their son’s memory alive through philanthropy and volunteerism. Bob currently serves on the Governing Council and Betsy is an active member of the Auxiliary at Good Samaritan Hospital.
pavilion. Most recently the Holland’s created a charitable lead uni-trust benefiting not only the significant renovations of Good Samaritan’s in-patient oncology unit, but also the DuPage Community Foundation, which will be run by their daughter Jennifer and their grandchildren. The in-patient oncology unit was recently dedicated and is named in honor of their son. Dick and Pat Mochel are the second generation of Mochels to be honored with this award. Dick’s mother, Margaret, won the award in 1993. This is the first time that two generations of a family have been honored in separate years. The Mochels have a lifetime connection to the hospital. Dick, who grew up in Downers Grove, is the son of one of the hospital’s founders, the late Gilbert “Gib” Mochel, and of Marge Mochel, a past president of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary. Dick and Pat have given both their time and resources to the community and specifically to Good Samaritan Hospital. Pat, like Betsy, is an active volunteer for the hospital’s Auxiliary, and Dick serves as a dedicated member of the Governing Council. Dick is a past president of the Lions Club and a past chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the joint gift the Mochels made with the Holland’s, they have also supported the hospital’s CCU and in recognition of their generosity they have had a patient room named in their honor.
They have teamed up with their good friends, the Mochels, to fund the purchase of pediatric equipment for the new surgical
