Simbang Gabi Novena Mass: December 20 5:00pm Simbang Gabi is a traditional Filipino Novena of masses to help the faithful prepare spiritually for Christmas. It was introduced into the Philippines in the 17th century by the Spanish conquistadores. On the nine days leading up to Christmas, villagers gather to celebrate mass before dawn so that farmers and fishermen can participate before the early start of their day's labor.

Flu Season During the cold and flu season, parishioners are welcome to give a friendly nod instead of a handshake if they prefer. Please try to be sensitive to the choices of your neighbor during the sign of peace. Also, taking from the chalice is an option - but not a requirement. When we receive the host, it is the whole and entire Christ received. Receiving from the cup is referred to as a fuller symbol of the communion we share in Christ, but not necessary for full communion.

Parish Youth Helping Those in Need The Kransberger, Nilson, Severino, and Roble families of our parish sponsored a project called Ryan’s Well (raising funds and awareness , building a well in Africa). This project was initiated by their sons in our religious education formation classes. I am so proud of these young boys for taking on this charitable project . What they gained out of this experience is that they know first hand that the poor and less fortunate need our assistance and prayers. The young boys may never be able to go serve in Africa but they received a taste and a glimpse of what God calls the youngest in our faith community to do. Thank you for the parishioners at the 8 and 10 o’clock masses who gave a financial gift for this effort. Thank you to the parents of these parish children who support their children, in caring for the poor. As a parish let us continue to support the children, teens and college students who strive to participate fully in their community and abroad. - Fr. Jarosz
Are you divorced and would like to know more about annulments? Do you think the process is too long or tedious? Please visit the Diocesan website www.dioceseofjoliet.org/tribunal for a brief explanation. You may contact Deacon Frank Lillig, 630.396.6077 or Eileen Maggiore, 630.396.6076, who are both field advocates for nullity of marriage.
Time to re-learn saying “Please and Thank you!” The subject of gratitude was discussed at a recent meeting of the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. At a sharing session of the Family Concerns commission, the suggestion was made that we need to re-learn the habit of saying “please and thank you.” The simple act of thanks-giving seems to be missing in our world today. Perhaps each of us could promote an “attitude of gratitude” now and through the Holiday shopping season. It is an easy thing to do and costs absolutely nothing. Just slow down a bit and become aware of the many opportunities there are to tell the people who help us that we appreciate their effort. You can make a difference.
50th Anniversary Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Father Peter Jarosz It's not too late to join! Kim White, from Totally Yours Pilgrimages, will be in the Narthex after every Mass on the weekend of Dec. 5-6, to answer any questions you may have. If we can get 20 people from our parish to go, Totally Yours Pilgrimages will donate back to the church the cost of 1 ticket. For info, call 630.396.6079.

Facts from the Past Did you know… The grounds of Christ the King parish didn’t always look like a park. Much of the 10-acre tract wasn’t landscaped until after Father John Ryan was named pastor in 1976. Father Ryan teamed with parishioner Al Pospischil to develop the park-like setting. Pospischil built the grotto near the school.

Dear Friends in Christ Coming home for Christmas motivates a lot travel plans this time of the year. For some people, it isn’t an easy journey. My friend, David, like many sons and daughters, left home under estranged circumstances. Although he had wanted to return home for quite a while, he was hesitant and afraid to do so. Would he be welcome? Would his father embrace him and tell him how much he loved and missed him? Would his mother understand his long absence and his surprise return? He missed the warmth of his family; the love that was there; and the smells and taste of familiar foods. His doubts had kept him away. It took a lot of courage on David’s part, but he did come home. He opened the door, walked in and said “Hello!” Joyfully, the first words he heard were; “Welcome back Dave, come in and join us!” David’s story is about one son’s return to his family gathering. We know that there are many sons and daughters out there who are reticent to return to their larger family group, the Church. We need to help find a way to encourage their joyful return to the Faith. During the months of December and January you will see television commercials that invite inactive Catholics to return to the Church. The Diocese of Joliet is joining the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Rockford in an effort to reach our inactive Catholic brothers and sisters. The campaign to welcome them back is called Catholics Come Home. Please pray this month for the success of Catholics Come Home. Let us welcome them with open arms and loving hearts, and bring joy and unity this holy season. Pray also for our country and our leaders, for peace in the world, and for our families. And finally, pray for each other, especially for those who lost a loved in this past year. As we begin the season of Advent, a time of waiting, we light the candles in the Advent wreath. The lighted candles are a sign of our hopeful expectation of the coming of the Light of the World. Let us wait with our hearts open in anticipation of His coming. May you have a blessed Advent Season.

Today’s Economic Crisis is a Failure of Responsible Stewardship The U.S. bishops' 1992 pastoral letter, Stewardship: A Disciple's Response, admonishes Catholic organizations that the practice of good stewardship requires that we "observe the most stringent ethical, legal and fiscal standards." Good intentions are not enough — in the Church or in society. Responsible stewardship requires discipline, sound judgment and standards of care that are designed to take care of and share all God's gifts. Today's financial crisis is the result of poor stewardship - by banks and other financial institutions, by regulatory agencies and by governmental officials charged with the responsibility to serve and protect our nation and its institutions. Greed, partisan politics and media hype do not promote good citizenship or good stewardship. When financial institutions and regulatory agencies fail to be responsible stewards of the public trust, government must intervene — to protect the common good. Massive bailouts should not be required. Sound principles, good judgment and responsible stewardship should be enough to protect what we invest. That's what good citizens and responsible stewards have a right to expect. But when government fails to do its duty - to develop and oversee standards of care that are prudent, effective and just, then it’s time to return to basics (Stewardship 101) on Wall Street, in Washington, D.C., and here at home. Where do we begin? The standard dictionary definition of a steward is "one who manages property that belongs to another." A good steward manages another’s property well. She grows it, prudently and responsibly, and ensures that the owner receives a good return on her investment. A poor steward takes foolish or unnecessary risks with the owner/investor’s property. At its most basic level, today's financial crisis is the result of irresponsible stewards taking bad risks with other people's money. Basic principles of Christian stewardship call us to gratitude, accountability, generosity and the willingness to give back with increase. We are called to grow God's gifts — not recklessly, irresponsibly or selfishly, but carefully and prudently. The good steward invests and saves. He does not bury his gifts. He puts them to work in responsible and productive investments. But that requires trustworthy financial institutions and the prudent oversight of agencies that accept their responsibility to guard and protect the public interest. People of faith acknowledge God as the giver, and true owner, of all creation. Everything that we have, and all that we are as human persons, comes to us from God as free and unmerited gifts. We don't own what we have in an absolute sense. We are but trusted stewards of the gifts God has given us - including the gift of life, our families and friends, our personal skills and talents, and all our material possessions. All of these spiritual and material gifts come from God. What God asks us to do with His gifts is to care for them (nurture and grow them) and to share them generously with others (as God has been generous to us). Greed is an insult to God's generosity. Whether born of a selfish desire for more and more possessions, or whether grounded in the fear that we won't have enough, greed refuses to accept that God will provide everything that we need. In our desire to acquire more and more, we cast aside our responsibility to be good stewards, to share with others. Instead, we seek to accumulate wealth at the expense of others and to regard our own interests as the number one priority. But greed always leads to misery in the end - for individuals and for institutions. And, so, the Lord challenges each of us: What does it profit you if you gain the whole world, but lose your soul (yourself) in the process? Let's pray that the current crisis is resolved fairly, equitably and in a nonpartisan concern for the common good. Let’s also pray that this financial crisis serves as a "wakeup call" that returns us, as individuals and as a nation, to fundamental principles of stewardship and to an observance of "the most stringent ethical, legal and fiscal standards" in our personal lives and in our communities.

Deadline for Ten Commandment Brick Order The deadline for ordering bricks around the Ten Commandment Monument is December 31, 2009, not in March. We are planning to install the bricks in March weather permitting in time for Easter. Please place your order as soon as you can. It takes several weeks for the order to be processed by the brick engraver. Consider giving a brick as a gift to honor and commemorate your loved ones this season. The proceeds from the sale of the bricks will also help Christ the King meet its financial obligations.

To All Who Bring the Eucharist To the Sick and Homebound Christ the King Parish Worship Commission is making changes that concern the Ministers of Care in their Sacramental duty to take the Body of Christ to the sick and homebound. We all hold the Most Holy Eucharist with the deepest love and respect, and because of this we need to adjust our regular practices to come into line with the rules of the Church. Starting the first week of Advent (this weekend), the Ministers of Care will be sent out from Mass. When you arrive at Mass, please place your OPENED pyx on the platen in the Narthex (on the gift table) with the appropriate number of hosts for the people to be seen that day only. The platen will be brought forward for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and will be consecrated along with the hosts for the Mass. After the communion, Father will call the Ministers of Care forward for a special blessing and send them forth to the sick and homebound. You must leave at that time and go directly to the people to whom you serve. We at Christ the King Parish represent the Body of Christ and so must hold the Eucharist with the highest reverence. We all know the most appropriate place for the Eucharist is in its consumption. The Tabernacle is for extra Hosts from the current days Mass and should not contain more than necessary. It is most appropriate to make sure that the time between Consecration and consumption is kept at a minimum. You must understand that these changes are not meant to be punitive. They are in keeping with the guidelines of the Roman Catholic Church and its rubrics. May God bless you all for your service and dedication to the Eucharist which is the summit of our faith in Christ Jesus. Deacon Peter A. Robinson
