Deaf President Now
• Gallaudet was first established as a university in 1857 • From that date until 1988 the university always had a hearing president • DPN protestors felt that this suggested a Deaf person was not felt to be competent to do the job • Others were frustrated that the president was not able to speak their language nor were they knowledgeable about Deaf culture.

• As part of the protest students barricaded entrances to the school, and no one was able to enter the campus • They made 4 demands to the board of trustees: 1)That a new deaf president be named immediately; 2) That the board of trustees, at that time composed of 17 hearing members and four deaf, be reconstituted with a 51% majority of deaf members; 3) That Jane Bassett Spilman, chair of the board of trustees (who, it was alleged, announced the
Deaf President Now • The protest lasted 6 days until I. King Jordan was named finally as the first Deaf president of the university • Deaf people see this as a triumph to this day.
