Greetings from Susan Smoller was delicious and I said in my speech, our dedication to each other is what makes this such a special project. We are all in this together and I want to thank all involved in the planning of the day, all who continue to be involved in the new building and all who are working so hard to raise the money we need in order to create our new

at the Rabbi’s open house at her home at 84 Roger Williams Circle in Cranston from 5-7 pm. This is a chance for us all to schmooze and be together to light candles on the 2nd day together.

We started a special collection of ribbons that are designed individually to reflect your wishes and prayers for the new temple. These ribbons will be sold for $18 at many events until the new building is constructed and will be displayed at the entrance to the new building during the dedication and for a short while thereafter. If you are interested in writing your special message and would like additional details please contact Lois Lury through the office and she will assist and guide you.

The annual Ira S. & Anna Galkin Program (Ruth Kaye’s “My Grandmother, My Mother and Me” one-woman show) is sure to be entertaining – come with your friends and family! I wish everyone a happy and healthy Chanukah. Please contact me at any time with any comments or questions. B’Shalom Susan

Kesher Corner: Internet Safety: Parenting in Today’s Electronic World Nicole Jellinek, LICSW sent or posted electronically nude or semi-nude images of themselves.

On October 29, Congregation Agudas Achim in Attleboro, another Kesher congregation, hosted an interactive workshop on parenting issues related to internet safety. The presentation provided information and education about issues our children face (though the presenter, an educator with the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, said she gives the same information to school groups). In an attempt to continue to disseminate information further, here are some tidbits, in no particular order:

Adults and teens have been prosecuted under child pornography laws for sexting. It is not only a crime to originate sexually explicit photos or text, but also to forward something one receives on their phone. What to do? If your child is bullied they should: • tell an adult • leave the online area they are in • block messages from harassing senders • save copies of any text or image they get • in some cases, notify police.

Cyber-bullying is defined as online social cruelty that involves sending or posting harmful or cruel text or images, using the internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. The intent is to hurt, harass, embarrass, humiliate. The National Association of School Psychologists estimates that 160,000 children miss school every day for fear of being picked on; that 1.6 million children are bullied each week; and that 40 – 50 % of students in grades 4 – 8 have been bullied online.

Parents should: • know who their children’s online “friends” are • not let children have computer in their bedroom but instead in a common area • set limits on concerning behavior • teach children to guard their contact information and not share passwords • encourage children to talk about their concerns and to express their feelings • validate the child’s feelings • recognize behavior that may indicate their child is concerned about going to school

Even children who are not actively involved in cyber-bullying (as either bully or victim) may play a role: as supporter, onlooker, defender. It is important for parents to ask their children DIRECTLY about online bullying and not assume children will bring concerns to parents.

If you have concerns that your child is engaged in concerning behavior with computers or mobile phones and need resources or to talk, please call Rabbi Levin or me. I can be reached confidentially at 401-338-8301.

Sexting is sending sexually explicit photos or text through one’s mobile phone. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy reports that 1 in 5 teens have either

The Cohen School News The Cohen School has celebrated many “firsts” this school year. The first meeting in a new location, the first Shabbat Yachad , the first meeting of the Torat Tots program, and the first “performance” of the Cohen School students as participants at the groundbreaking on Middle Road. Students are working hard to hone Hebrew reading skills, learn about mitzvoth (commandments), keep up with the weekly Torah portion, and to learn to sing Hebrew songs. These “firsts” are a wonderful beginning for students and families, but it is equally important to ensure that the firsts become second, third, and future experiences. As the school year progresses, we look forward to celebrating, learning and playing together. December December December December

Now It’s Easier Being Green! Think Local

The “premium” we pay for out of season fruits and vegetables isn’t just the price of the produce, it’s the fuel that was burned getting it to your local market. Peaches in November? Those weren’t grown in New England! Look for local produce, get into eating seasonally. You’ll enjoy fresher produce, support local farmers and help protect the environment.
