To macke it possible to record the location of a particular piece of information each WWW document is assigned a Uniform Resouree Locator (URL). A document’s URL is a string of characters that identifies the type of document and its location in the internet. Gieven the URL for a document, mosaic software can determine the computer on Which the document resides, the service on that computer used to access the document , and the location of the specific doccument. Beccause mosaic can use a variety of mechanissmn including gopher and FTP to retrieve documents, it provides a uniform, seamless way to access information on the internet.
