News and Events In The End, It’s All About Love; Hope Is The Light **The next DCOH date will take place on October 28th at the Boggs Center.** On Thursday, May 21st, the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality hosted a peaceful demonstration against the Warren Police after tasering and killing 16-year old Robert Mitchell, a young man with a learning disability, in an abandoned home in eastside Detroit. All present expressed the dire need to create conceptual and physical Peace Zones For Life, which DCOH discussed during the June and August monthly meetings. The Robert Mitchell family, Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Yusef Shakur, Better Detroit Youth Movement, and others made very important contributions in stimulating the conversation, and provided a critical trajectory in navigating the idea of Peace Zones in asking: “What is Peace?” The conversation that opened up–to which everyone contributed ideas–emphasized the need to: be consistent, create trust, create community, establish respect, create local constitutions for peace Zones, listen, hope, teach others to become leaders, build inter-generational relationships. How do we make connections? How do we “put the neighbor back in the hood?” DCOH is a web committed to supporting and celebrating the work of local community organizations and through deepening the conversation and expanding the network and web. Maybe DCOH can develop “Create Peace zones for Life” Window Signs or T-shirts. As the participants reminded us, Detroit is a Breath of Hope. It is internationally recognized in regularly occurring articles such as the internet-based FLYP Media, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Nation Magazine, Harper’s Magazine and the Christian Science Monitor. The most recent article appears in Sojourners Magazine and is written by Bill Wylie-Kellerman.
