September Service Learning This year the JILG Illinois Career Association members started the year with a fund raiser to help the local No Kill – Humane Shelter located off Crystal Lake Road in Jersey County. Nichole Nevlin spearheaded the event as she has been a long time volunteer at the shelter. The students decided to hold a bake sale to raise funds for the shelter to purchase blankets, food and cleaning supplies. The students not only brought in delicious baked goods to sell, but many gave up their lunch periods to man the baked goods table.

GUEST SPEAKERS Danna Howell, from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, spoke to the students about different careers offered at the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. Ms. Howell involved the students in a matching game. The students were to match an item with a card representing the career in which the item is used. The students were very engaged, learned a great deal about team work and the education offered at the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. Lt. Roger Kirby, JCHS SRO Officer, provided the students with information about the variety of careers in the area of law enforcement. Lt. Kirby spoke about a career with the Jerseyville City Police, Illinois State Police, FBI, U.S. Marshal Dept. and the Secret Service. The students had a great many questions about careers in law enforcement.

Class Work This month the students were involved in a variety of team building activities from “Saving Fred” the gummy worm, to playing “Survival in the Desert”, to holding a “Values Auction”, to creating a Homecoming Float to represent the JCHS JILG. The students also completed the Strong Interest Inventory, a career exploration tool used by LCCC. We will go over the students’ results next week. The students completed several problem solving scenarios, gave a power point presentation about the career they wish to pursue, and explored the area of work values and ethics.
JILG Homecoming Float This year’s Homecoming Theme was “Rock the Night Away”. The Jilgsters created several posters using this theme to show their support of the Panther Football Team tromping the Triad Knights. During the Homecoming Parade, in keeping with the “Rock” theme, Stephen Fox played the electric guitar while Dennis Hartman led the members in a variety of rock songs.
