Daniel: Ambassadors for Christ © K.E. Stegall 2006

Readers: Narrator Narrator-2 Narrator-3 The Prophet Daniel The King of Babylon The Apostle John Leader People

Aliens & Strangers Narrator: In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god. (Daniel 1:1-2) Sing Psalm 137- stanzas 1,3,5. (Red – Psalms for Singing) Narrator: Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility- young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king's service. Among these were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. ... (Daniel 1:3-6) Sing Psalm 119Q- 2. Narrator: But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

Leader: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, People: but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Then we will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2) Sing Psalm 40E- 3,4. Narrator: To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. At the end of the time set by the king to bring them in, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king's service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. (Daniel 1:17-20) Leader: ...they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People: We are aliens and stranger on earth. Leader: People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. ... a better country--a heavenly one. People: We are looking for a better country–a heavenly one. Leader: Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:13-16) People: God has prepared a city for us. Sing Psalm 48B- 6,7.

Sing Psalm 119B- 1, 4.

Leader: But our citizenship is in heaven.

Leader: Therefore, I urge you, brothers,

People: Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,

People: in view of God's mercy, to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is our spiritual act of worship.

Leader: who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control,

People: will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. (Philippians 3:20-21)

rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him--

Leader: We are therefore Christ's ambassadors People: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: Leader: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. People: We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

Leader: you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: People: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."

Leader: We implore you on Christ's behalf: Leader: Now to you who believe, People: Be reconciled to God. People: this stone is precious. Leader: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, People: so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (II Corinthians 5:18-21) Sing Psalm 45A- 1,2,4,5.

Leader: But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, "and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall."... But you are a chosen people,

********** Christ, Our Rock Narrator: In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said: (Daniel 2:1,19,20) The Prophet Daniel: "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands -a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. "The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy." (Daniel 2:44-48)

People: We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, Leader: that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. People: Once we were not a people, but now we are the people of God; once we had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy.

Leader: As you come to him,

Leader: Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (I Peter 2:4-12)

People: the living Stone--

Sing Psalm 37E- 18,21.

Leader: Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,

Christ, The Son of God, Our Savior Narrator: King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, "This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of every language: you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace." ... (Daniel 3:1-6) Sing Psalm 2- 1,4. Narrator: At this time some astrologers ... said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O king, live forever! ... there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon-Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego-who pay no attention to you, O king. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up." Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. ..and... said to them, The King of Babylon: “... fall down and worship the image I made, ... But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?" Narrator: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." (Daniel 3:8-18) Sing Psalm 44D, 3, and on page 44F-10. Narrator: The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, King of Babylon: "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" ... "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." (Daniel 3:22-25)

People: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Leader: Jesus replied, ... On this rock I will build my church, People: and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. ... Leader: Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. People: For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:16-18, 24-25) Narrator: Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, King of Babylon: "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" Narrator: ... the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. King of Babylon: Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. (Daniel 3:26-28) Sing Psalm 118C- 10,12,13, 17. ******** Humble Yourselves The King of Babylon: I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous. I had a dream that made me afraid. ...Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for

me. But you can, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you."

People: for we have one Teacher, the Christ. Leader: The greatest among you will be your servant.

The Prophet Daniel: Then Daniel ... answered, "My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries! The tree you saw,...you, O king, are that tree! ... Therefore, O king, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue."

People: For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:8-12) Sing Psalm 131- 1,2,3. Leader: All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, People: because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Narrator: ...All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, he said, "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?" The words were still on his lips when a voice came from heaven, "This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes." Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. ... King of Babylon: At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever....Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble. (Daniel 4:4, 18-37) Leader: Jesus said, "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master People: and we are all brothers. Leader: And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' People: for we have one Father, and he is in heaven. Leader: Nor are you to be called 'teacher,'

Leader: Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, People: that he may lift you up in due time. (I Peter 5:5-6) ************

The Wages of Sin is Death Narrator: King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them. While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone. Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his knees knocked together and his legs gave way. ... The queen, ... said. ... "Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means." (Daniel 5:1-10) The Prophet Daniel: Then Daniel answered the king, ...

You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. ..."This is what these words mean: Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. Tekel : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Peres : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." (Daniel 5:23-28) Narrator: ...That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, ... (Daniel 5:30-31) Leader: What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? People: Not at all! ... Leader: "There is no one righteous, People: not even one; Leader: there is no one who understands, People: no one who seeks God. Leader: All have turned away, People: they have together become worthless;

anyone who prays to any god or man during the next thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown into the lions' den. ... So King Darius put the decree in writing. Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. (Daniel 6:4-10) Sing Psalm 5A- 1,3. Narrator: Then these men ... found Daniel praying and asking God for help. ... So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. The king said to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!" Sing Psalm 144, verse10-11(green book) ... King of Babylon: At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions' den. ... he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?" The Prophet Daniel: Daniel answered, "O king, live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king." (Daniel 6:11-22)

Leader: there is no one who does good, People: not even one." (Romans 3:9-12)

Leader: For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed,

Leader: For the wages of sin is death,... (Romans 6:23)

People: a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,

People: The wages of sin is death.

Leader: just as it is written:

Sing Psalm 5A- 2,4.

People: "The righteous will live by faith."(Romans 1:17)

********** The Gift of God is Eternal Life Narrator: ...the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel... They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God." ... the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that

Narrator: The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. (Daniel 6:23) Sing Psalm 5A- 5. Leader: But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, People: to which the Law and the Prophets testify.

Leader: This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. People: There is no difference, Leader: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, People: and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:21-24)

"So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: 'The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth. But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever-yes, for ever and ever.' ... " 'But the court will sit, and the beasts’ power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever. Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.' (Daniel 7:15-27) Sing Psalm 22I- 12, 13.

Leader: When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! People: But now that we have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit we reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. Leader: For the wages of sin is death, People: but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:20-23)

Leader: But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, People: made us alive with Christ Leader: even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. People: And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, Leader: in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Sing Psalm 16A- 7,8,10. People: For it is by grace we have been saved, through faith-and this not from ourselves, it is the gift of God--

(Ephesians 2:4-10) Sing Psalm 22I- 14. Raised With Christ ********** Narrator: In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. (Daniel 7:1) A Prayer of Confession The Prophet Daniel: "I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this.

The Prophet Daniel: In the first year of Darius son of Ahasuerus (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom- in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the

Scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. (Daniel 9:1-3) Sing Psalm 143A- 1,3. The Prophet Daniel: I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: Leader: "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands, People: we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. Leader: "Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame ..

Leader: ...he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, People: but because of his mercy. Leader: He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, People: whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, Leader: so that, having been justified by his grace, People: we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:5-7) Sing Psalm 51E- 5,6,7. Leader: O Lord, listen! People: O Lord, listen! Leader: O Lord, forgive! People: O Lord, forgive!

When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, "Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength." So he said, “...Soon I will return... (Daniel 10:7, 8, 12, 18-19) Christ, The King, is Coming Narrator: In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel ... Daniel: I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of the finest gold around his waist. His body was like chrysolite, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. (Daniel 10:1-6) Sing Psalm 97A- 2,4. Narrator-2: After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John .. up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. ...a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. (Matthew 17:1-8) Narrator-3: As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. ... The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. (Acts 9:3-7) The Prophet Daniel: I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; the men with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. Then I heard him speaking, ..."Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. ... Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. "Do not be afraid, O man highly esteemed," he said. "Peace! Be strong now; be strong."

The Apostle John: I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. (Revelation 19:11-16) Sing Psalm 103D- 13-15. But at that time your people-everyone whose name is found written in the book-will be delivered. ... But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. ... Then I, Daniel, looked, ... I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?” (Daniel 12:1-8) Sing Psalm 110- 2, 3. The Apostle John: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer

will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 22:1-6)

our Lord's patience means salvation, ...
