Gracious Living

If you strive to find a balance between fresh looking and functional, you’ll find it in Contemporary Livingª. This mix has it all: distinctive linear profiles, lively curves, modern metallics, and more.

You appreciate the past, but live in the present. Inspired by the French countryside, Vintage Casual¨ speaks to this dual sensibility with gorgeous profiles and rich finishes in pieces made for the way you want to live.

You’re elegant and approachable at the same time. For a home that’s equally sophisticated and inviting, embrace New Traditionsª and surround yourself with pieces that reflect refined, tailored and graceful silhouettes.

Mirrored Boxes reflect light and offer extra storage.

Edgy metal Satchel Table Lamp has a textured finish.

The Shandel Table Lamp’s clear glass globe is perfectly positioned between natural wood and a textured shade. Versatile Cowhide Pouf doubles as a side table, ottoman, or seat.

Draven, Striped, and Brennan Pillows provide the perfect accent for a neutral sofa or chair.

Impart a clean, organic style with an Embroidered Pillow or add a touch of bling with the Castine Pillow.

Moriann Bar Stool features an authentically timeworn appearance, with hints of dark undertones that enhance its aged patina.

Clear glass and chrome Tailynn Table Lamp brings classic style to light.

Mix in various shapes from the same color family, like Langor and Orona Pillows on seating and beds.

The dramatic profile of the Owensbe Accent Chair sports a bohemian-chic ikat fabric.

SHERYL CROW PHOTOGRAPHED BY PAUL COSTELLO.

If I were Trisha Yearwood, I don’t think I’d ever leave this porch. (Turn to page 16 to see how you can enter to win a chance to meet Trisha and seven more country artists!)

If this issue has any sort of theme, it’s not “The Music Issue” or “The Country Issue,” but best summarized (not so succinctly!) as “The Driving-Along-a-Dirt-Road-on-a-Summer-Day-With-theWindows-Down-and-Suddenly-Hearing-Your-Favorite-Song-onthe-Radio Issue.” That sentiment—that easy-breezy, sunlightdappled, not-a-care-in-the-world feeling—is what summer in the country is all about. And music—whether it’s old-school country, modern-day country, or not-at-all country—helps set that mood. So we asked a few of our friends in the music industry to ride shotgun this month and help us turn up the dial on all things summer. Darius Rucker and his “Good for a Good Time” tour mates share a few of their seasonal must-haves in “Country Living Presents: Summer’s Greatest Hits,” a spirited Top 40 roundup of finds (including that cute little orange grill below) to make your days that much brighter. Sheryl Crow (a CL subscriber and self-described junker!) opened the doors to her stunning 50-acre Nashville property, which includes a house, a barn, a little white church, and— here’s the Chevy on top—a mint green, 1951 pickup truck that she found on eBay. Trisha Yearwood, likely the hardest working woman in music, kindly let us spend a day at her beautiful Tennessee farmhouse while extolling the virtues of her go-to five-ingredient apple pie (page 88). Other high notes include: the barn party of all barn parties (page 80), a fabulous farmhouse makeover (page 52), and a whimsical Sheryl Crow backyard bash (page 95). And because summer wrangles the talent isn’t complete without tree swings and root beer on set: her horse Big Boy. floats, we moseyed over to Texas to shoot the coolest, most country-fied playhouse we’ve ever laid eyes on (page 68). Oh, and if you are a modern-day country music fan, don’t miss the chance to join some of your favorite artists (page 16) on tour (and backstage!) this summer. Because the only thing better than singing along to the radio is singing along with the real deal.

ANTIQUES, COLLECTIBLES, AND OTHER ONE-OF-A-KIND FINDS FISHING LURES

These collectibles can reel in anywhere from $5 to as much as $100,000 for a rare find, such as the metal Giant Haskell Minnow (not shown). Heddon invented the first wooden lure in the late 1890s, and this circa 1906 Heddon find (1), dubbed the Slopenose due to its angled head, commands $500. The Little Wonder, a wooden bait (2) made by Clinton Wilt Mfg. Co. in 1913, goes for $800 thanks to still-intact barbershop-style stripes and working spinner. Arthur J. Kumm created the Fish Spotter (3) in 1933, and the wooden version is now valued at $100. (See page 27 for sources.)

FISHING REELS

In 1917, Heddon developed a line of high-end fishing reels to compete with gear made by Meek. The No. 30, seen at top right (1), was the most costly, priced at up to $60 at the time. Complete with leather case and original box (not pictured), this reel fetches around $500 today. Often mistaken for a fly-fishing reel due to its large diameter, this 1930s find (2) by Go-Ite of Kokomo, Indiana, is worth $300. The petite brass reel (3) made for trout fishing by Hendryx of New Haven, Connecticut, dates back to the 1890s— before the company was acquired by Winchester. Still functioning, it’s valued at $150.

The brighter, the better! When it comes to transistor radios from the ’50s and early ’60s, hues like orange-red and powder blue really strike a chord with collectors.

TRANSISTOR RADIOS

In 1954, music became mobile with the invention of the portable radio. Early examples like the Regency TR-1 (not pictured)—the world’s first pocket radio—can sell to the tune of $1,000. Later versions like this late ’60s pocket-size player made by Omegas (1) go for around $50 if still in working order.

Have an old transistor that’s experiencing radio silence? Remove the back and turn it into a hiding spot for keys!

1. SIGN

Despite the fact that they don’t hold an especially high value, vintage lake signs from any era can be hard to find. This 1970s road marker, which once led visitors to Kansas’s popular Waconda Lake, was scooped up on eBay for only $40.

2. LANTERNS

Kerosene lanterns have been lighting things up since the 1800s, and this 1970s Coleman model in working order goes for about $60 ($15 if not). More seasoned collectors hunt for old railroad lanterns with colored glass by Dietz or Embury.

3. COOLERS

Portable ice chests were introduced in the 1930s. Made of metal, they rusted easily and often didn’t last more than a few summers. This 1950s model by Thermos is valued at $90, while the ’50s Coca-Cola Co. cooler nabs $110-$185.

4. CADDY

Originally introduced in 1923, this six-pack carrier was an innovation by the Coca-Cola Co. When furnished with vintage glass bottles, this ’50s-era aluminum caddy sells for up to $100, depending on condition.

5. COOLER JUG

Pelican made drinking jugs in a variety of prints and colors in the 1950s, but preppy plaids tend to be worth the most green. In addition to Pelican, plaid vessels by Thermos and Stanley can be worth $30 to $100, depending on the condition.

WHAT IT IS:

RCA VICTOR SLIDE-O-MATIC RECORD PLAYER

“These record players are somewhat rare,” says eBay’s Jim Griffith. “This particular model dates back to the 1950s and made listening to a stack of 45s—the only kind of record it plays—pretty labor-intensive,” he says. “Records are inserted one at a time, so you basically listen to a single song before it’s time to insert the next one.” This model is less sought after than a later version that combined the record player and an AM radio in a single device. WHAT IT’S WORTH:

WHAT IT IS:

HANK WILLIAMS CONCERT POSTER

Sadly, no. “The poster is a reproduction. Most real ones have a printer’s mark along the bottom edge, and collectors want the real deal,” says Heritage Auctions’ Marsha Dixey. However, Hank Williams is the most collectible country star, so if you had an authentic vintage poster, it could nab as much as $25,000 at auction. WHAT IT’S WORTH:

“My nana called this curio her ‘music cupboard.’ Is that truly what it is? Was it made to hold records?” —T.L., CARL JUNCTION, MO

WHAT IT IS:

SHEET MUSIC CABINET

Your nana’s cupboard is actually a Classical Revival-style music cabinet that was made in the late 19th century in England, according to appraiser Helaine Fendelman. But it wasn’t designed to hold records. “The upper shelves and vertical separations enclosed by the door originally held sheet music organized by category, size, or type,” she says. WHAT IT’S WORTH:

Animal expert DR. TRICIA EARLEY addresses puppy allergies, shy horses, pig-friendly menus, and more.

My horse, Francis, hates riding in groups. When it’s just the two of us, all is well. Is this common? Is there anything I can do to put him more at ease? -P.K., Austin, TX

As herd animals, horses are typically more comfortable in groups. Some prefer to lead and others are content to follow. So while it’s not all that common to find a horse who prefers to be alone on the trail, it’s likely an indicator that Francis prefers trotting around trails with you rather than worrying about where he is positioned in a group

of opinionated horses. Because it’s much safer to ride with a buddy, try going out with a friend who has a quiet, easygoing gelding. If your horse is still uneasy and insists that you hit the trails solo, make sure to take along a cell phone and inform someone of your intended course and expected time of arrival.

Allergies are most certainly a common cause of itching in dogs. But before you chalk it up to that, I would advise taking Hoosier for a visit to his veterinarian. She can rule out the possibility of external parasites, like fleas or skin mites (such as Demodex or scabies). If allergies are the culprit, differentiating inhaled allergies from food allergies can be a bit of a challenge, as the symptoms tend to look the same. Inhaled allergy symptoms are more common, tend to be seasonal in nature, and will cause your dog to feel itchy certain times of the year but feel perfectly normal during other seasons. Food allergies are year-round and will cause symptoms like chronic itching and ear infections. Your veterinarian may advise intradermal skin testing or a hypoallergenic food trial to determine the cause of your pooch’s annoying skin problems as well as the right solution.

My 6-month-old puppy, Hoosier, has been scratching a lot. How can I tell whether the cause is related to environmental allergies or the food I’m feeding him? Or could it be something else? -D.H., Pikeville, TN

Are there any foods or scraps that I should think twice about feeding my farm pigs? -N.K., Tulsa, OK

Most people think of pigs as living garbage disposals, capable of eating anything and everything slopped in their troughs. But honestly, there are a few things you should leave out of the feed pail. Raw meats should always be avoided, as they can carry harmful bacteria and disease. Many fruits and vegetables are perfectly safe for pigs, but their leaves and seeds may not be. (Think rhubarb and potato leaves and avocado skin and pits—all can cause illness and should be avoided.) When in doubt, look to a commercial feed to provide your pigs with a balanced diet without the guesswork.

Congratulations on your new addition! I’m so glad that you asked this question, as all too often I see pets ignored once a baby enters the fold. Many new parents toss the dog outside when the baby is around, but dogs are smart and will quickly associate the baby with the negative experience of being ignored. To keep everyone happy, find activities that both your little one and Oscar can enjoy and do together. This could be a walk or movie time on the sofa with the whole family. Make these shared activities a part of your routine, and Oscar will associate his new human companion with happy experiences—and everyone will get the attention they deserve.

WHAT WE DID TO...

THE EXTERIOR

A TOTAL FACE-LIFT

To refresh the tired exterior, Holly requested James Hardie (jameshardie.com) HardiePlank lap siding and HardieTrim boards in Arctic White, an eco-friendly choice that’s as long-lasting as it is beautiful, thanks to its unique weatherresistant fiber cement formulation.

54

COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

INCREASED SEATING “The double porch draws you in the moment you drive up,” says Holly. To maximize her favorite feature, we installed pairs of swings from The Home Depot (homedepot.com) opposite one another on both porch levels. A quartet of crisp white rocking chairs (also from The Home Depot) furthers the seating options. UPDATED ACCESSORIES Page upped the home’s curb appeal with mahogany doors. Black wall sconces from The Home Depot—inspired by the era the home was built— accent both entries.

FABRIC SWATCHES, RANDY MAYOR.

FRESHENED THE PALETTE Style Director Page Mullins replaced the weathered siding with crisp white planks from James Hardie (jameshardie.com), painted the porch ceiling a dreamy blue (Borrowed Light by Farrow & Ball), and added patterned throw pillows. Holly worked with local landscape architect Anne Daigh (annedaigh.com) to add a little green.

THE BEDROOM BROUGHT IN THE COZY To make the best use of the space, Page placed reader-selected Sleep Number’s Contemporary Camelback upholstered bed and i8 mattress (sleepnumber .com) in front of a window and created a focal point with bold draperies. (To maximize natural light, Page extended the rod 6 inches beyond the window’s frame). She also added nickel bedside lamps (circalighting.com) and a tufted linen settee (pier1.com). ENHANCED HISTORIC DETAILS To brighten up the space, the beadboard ceiling and walls were painted a crisp white (Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball). Holly discovered the old pine floors after ripping up the carpet, but they were in rough shape. Rather than undertake a costly restoration, she chose to paint them a custom Farrow & Ball blue for a bold pop of color. COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

ADDED POPS OF BLACK From the drapery hardware (Royal Wood Hardware by The Shade Store; theshade store.com) and ceiling fan (rejuvenation.com) to the bedside tables (boston interiors.com) and mantel, ebony accents anchor the light space and add sophistication. Minimalist paintings by Holly’s husband, Chris (chriscolemanart.com), add another dramatic layer to the room. UP NEXT: Look for Holly’s

RECONFIGURED STORAGE Before, a corner of the bedroom served as clothing storage in the closet-less room. Page removed the hanging rod and replaced it with a small desk to carve out a writing nook. An antique armoire now acts as a makeshift closet.

Crow’s Nest

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow filled every nook and cranny of her Nashville property—which includes a house, a church, and a barn—with unexpected finds from a lifetime of junking. (Hey, if it makes her happy.)

After 20 years of living in Los Angeles, Sheryl Crow was ready to put down roots in a place that “felt normal.” The Missouri native originally bought a place in rural Tennessee, but as her two sons, Wyatt and Levi, got closer to school age, she moved to a house on a hill on 50 acres in Nashville. “It’s very private, and that really spoke to me,” she says. The extra land afforded her plenty of space to build a multi-use barn (part recording studio, part saloon, part real-deal horse barn) as well as a church (she was inspired to build the latter after seeing one for sale on eBay). The sprawling property offers lots of opportunity to display her numerous collections. “I’ve always loved old stuff. I got my love of antiquing—we called it junking— from my mom,” Sheryl says. These days, her treasure hunts mainly happen online—her assistant refers to her as “the Queen of eBay.” Her only rule: “I just buy what I love.” WRITTEN BY LAURA KOSTELNY PHOTOGRAPHS BY PAUL COSTELLO

In the House

WHAT SHE COLLECTS: Antique books, equestrian-inspired pieces, vintage boxes, not to mention Grammys (nine of ’em)

After a few years of living in the country, Sheryl packed up her sons and moved to Nashville in 2012. “We brought all of our country animals into the city like The Beverly Hillbillies,” she says. The centerpiece of the property, an English manorlike home, built in 2005, boasts rich wood paneling, multiple fireplaces, and beautiful beams that make it the perfect backdrop for her antique finds both large and small.

n

CADDY CORNER Sheryl first discovered vintage tea caddies at a flea market in Franklin, Tennessee, and was inspired. “I like the idea of people congregating around old objects and having conversations through the years,” she says.

A riding boot makes for a well-heeled lamp base.

n

HORSE PLAY Sheryl has always had a penchant for horses and riding boots. (Note the horse lamp and boot lamp in the cozy, wood-beamed living room.) “I asked Santa for a horse every year, and I was always mildly disappointed when I didn’t get one,” she says.

62

COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

Sheryl has collected cowboy boots since childhood. “At one time, I owned almost 200 pairs, but I’ve auctioned some off for charity.”

n

GOING TO THE CHAPEL After attempting to buy an old Zion church in rural Tennessee, and then another one she found on eBay (“The guy said he’d sell the whole thing for $5,000, but it was full of dry rot”), Sheryl built this one from the ground up.

In the Church

WHAT SHE COLLECTS: Religious statues and figurines, glass cloches, vintage suitcases, oil portraits

“When I bought this property, I thought it would be nice to have a space that has nothing to do with work—just a quiet and sacred place to gather,” Sheryl says. She enlisted the help of Jim Mullowney of Mullowney General Contractors to construct the chapel from a mix of reclaimed and new materials. Now, it’s the ideal place to sit and read or just enjoy the silence—well, some silence. “The kids do like to go in and ring the bell,” she says.

n

DOME SWEET DOME Sheryl’s love for glass cloches began when she visited Antiques on Holiday in Destin, Florida. “They had a table filled with them, and that’s where I got quite a few. They look so beautiful, and you can put anything in there.”

n

SOUL SEARCHING Sheryl lived in a Spanish-style house in Los Angeles for many years that she “filled to the gills” with religious collectibles. So she had plenty of items to furnish her sanctuary from the get-go. Sheryl has since supplemented the serene retreat with tons of religious items from—you guessed it—eBay, including the stained glass window and stately front doors.

In the Barn

Antique advertising signage, vintage records, dress forms, paperweights, guitars

WHAT SHE COLLECTS:

When the barn was in the design stage, Sheryl planned to have a simple writing room upstairs, but once the room was soundproofed, it became a full-blown studio. “It’s ideal because I’m a single mom—I can go to work just down the driveway,” she says. Downstairs, Sheryl created a saloon and filled the walls with her impressive collection of antique signs. “It’s a great gathering place. We’ve had a lot of really good fund-raising events here,” she says.

n

WEIGHTS OF THE WORLD “When I was growing up, my grandma had a paperweight on her desk that had a picture of my dad when he was a baby in the 1930s. I imagine that was pretty spiffy and a new idea at the time. So when I saw one, I thought, I have to get it.” From there, the glass domes multiplied.

n

PICKIN’ PARTY Sheryl has recorded her last two albums, Feels Like Home and 100 Miles from Memphis, in her home studio, and all the guitars are playable, including a very special one—the “money maker”—that she’s used to write every hit of her career. (She’s had 31 of them, but who’s counting?) SIGN O’ THE TIMES Sheryl’s always on the hunt for old signage. “We’ve gotten away from using our hands and expressing ourselves through art,” she says. “I love that people at one time made their own advertising.”

66

COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

n

PLAY ROOM Sheryl also uses the barn to listen to records. “Two Christmases ago, my band gave me a great turntable and selected three records apiece to curate a collection for me. It really meant a lot,” she says.

honky-tonk girl Deep in the heart of Texas, designer Bailey McCarthy surprised her youngsters with the country’s coolest playhouse—a 250square-foot remake of the state’s oldest dance hall. OLDIE BUT GOODIE

Gruene Hall has been rockin’ in New Braunfels, Texas, since 1878 and has hosted Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and George Strait.

GRUENE HALL EXTERIOR, BRUCE MALONE.

“The fact that we could replace ‘Gruene’ with ‘Grace’ made it almost too good to be true!” Bailey says.

HIGH NOTE

The galvanized water tower is named after Grace’s younger brother, Harry.

W PONY PARKING

Bandana-clad horses stick around at a rustic hitching post.

hen designer and shop owner Bailey McCarthy (biscuit-home.com) decided to build a playhouse for her daughter, Grace, at the family’s white farmhouse in Bellville, Texas, she gave the boot to more conventional, cookie-cutter structures. Instead, Bailey set her sights on replicating an iconic Lone Star State landmark— Gruene Hall, the oldest operating dance hall in the state. She enlisted Pennsylvania-based Lilliput Play Homes (lilliputplay homes.com) to re-create the venue, and luckily this wasn’t their first rodeo. The company specializes in crafting extraordinary kidfriendly digs. After working with Bailey on drawings, Lilliput had the honky-tonk ready in eight weeks and assembled it onsite in one afternoon. And just in time: Grace was ready and eager for her debut—pink guitar and all. COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

BEHIND THE SCENES

Like the original Gruene Hall (above), Grace Hall wouldn’t be complete without the iconic curtained mural. The re-creation was hand-painted by Lilliput’s staff of artists in Pennsylvania.

70

COUNTRYLIVING.COM JUNE 2016

CENTER STAGE Bailey sent drawings of Gruene Hall’s exterior and interior to the artisans at Lilliput Play Homes, who then replicated the structure with cellular PVC lumber that’s weather- and rot-resistant. They even cut grooves into planks and hand-painted grains to resemble the building’s original woodwork. The table and benches were constructed from discarded shipping pallets.

No boots? No problem. A corner of Grace Hall is equipped with plenty of pairs for dress up.

Playtime isn’t reserved solely for inside. The water tower doubles as a super fun slide!

PLAYING HOUSE

If you can dream it (or snap a photo of it), Lilliput Play Homes can—and does—build it.

KITCHENETTE Soup’s on! When Grace isn’t performing her version of crowd-favorite “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” she stays busy preparing a number of imaginary treats at the kitchen station Lilliput also constructed from old shipping pallets.

What’ll it be? Duffy’s Diner comes equipped with a booth and a drive-thru window!

This Church Playhouse will give your children a great reason to use #blessed.

Little ones will get fired up over the Olde Firehouse, which comes with a pole and hose.

SNACK TIME If you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band...and refreshments at the ready. Here, the watering hole’s pint-size performers pause for a round of root beer floats.

Any kid would be pumped to have his own Full-service Gas Station.

IT WAS A WRONG TURN that initially led Cooper Boone to the right spot. “When I happened upon this place, I thought, ‘I have been dreaming about this property since I was a child!’ ” says Cooper. While he loved the picturesque white farmhouse, it was the Pennsylvania Dutch bank barn out back that got his attention. There was only one problem: It wasn’t on the market. But after years of drive-bys, he got a (literal) sign, and it said “For Sale.” He snapped up the place and immediately went to work on the barn, which needed more than a little TLC. “She was a hot mess,” Cooper laughs. “There was a hole in the roof, the floor was all rotted, and it had faded to a dingy brown.” After 17 years, endless coats of red paint, new electrical and plumbing, and load after load of reclaimed materials, the structure went from a disaster to the perfect party place, bar(n) none.

SET THE

Cooper divided the wide-open, 1,100-square-foot barn into “rooms” for functions like cooking, dining, and gathering. The goal: to create a comfortable, inviting party setting layered with vintage charm. “I’m a big believer that a space should allow people to let their hair down and be themselves,” says Cooper. “I like to have areas for people to gather as a group but also to sneak away for quieter conversation.”

LI VI NG ROOM

The “more-the-merrier” philosophy of the barn is reinforced by built-in benches designed to seat a crowd. As a rule, Cooper is drawn to things that are both beautiful and functional, like the blue pie safe he found dumped at the curb. “I literally draped my body over it while Mark got the truck!” he says. An eclectic mix of vintage finds— from county fair ribbons to bowling pins—come together for a fun vignette.

LO FT LOUNGE

Overhead, in the hay loft, an intimate seating arrangement provides a cozy spot for conversation. The vintage rattan settee boasts old military blankets-turnedcushions, while a “wall” of vintage factory racks provides a lot of display space for an ever-evolving mix of Craigslist and cleaned-up junking finds.

82

KITCHEN

>

Along the barn’s kitchen wall, Cooper repurposed 1-foot-wide boards looped with jute rope into a rustic shelving unit. His collection of yellowware bowls, interspersed with quirky “bits and bobs” (including a sign that gives a nod to his latest album), adds a pop of color. “A grouping offers much more visual impact,” advises Cooper.

MOO-VABLE ART Corrugated metal gets an artistic upgrade with a giant hand-painted butcher chart. The wall retracts and provides access to the back patio.

UPCYCLED FURNITURE Cooper found an old factory gear at Brimfield (brimfield antiquemarket.com), turned it on its side, and topped it with sheep fencing for a cool cocktail table.

SET THE

“The barn is all about friends gathering and enjoying delicious food together, and the table is the center of it all,” says Cooper. In order to accommodate a large dinner party, he pushes two 10-foot tables together. There’s room for plenty of guests, but the narrow width keeps the conversation flowing. From there, he employs his top eight no-fail tabletop tricks that work for every occasion.

CUSTOMIZABLE TABLES Order one (or two!) of Cooper’s Truman tables (from $900; f42home.com).

String Lights, $25; worldmarket.com

SET THE

Pre-party, Cooper leaves very little to chance. “I assign specific food dishes to people and will even give out recipe ideas. I also ask everyone to bring their dish in something white to keep it cohesive,” he says. He sets up a serve-yourself bar, mood lighting, and crowd-pleasing tunes, so that when guests arrive, he can devote the rest of the night to having fun.

The Buffet...

The Signature Cocktail

The kitchen island doubles as an ideal food station and gathering place for a guest list that includes friends both old and new. “I’ll even ask people to bring along a friend I’ve never met before,” he says.

The Johnny Guitar

The Music... Good tunes make a party great, so what could be finer than having a host who moonlights as a country artist? After dessert, the back galvanized wall slides open and Cooper and bandmates Kevin McComb and Kristin Hackett take to the patio-turned-stage and get guests on their feet with a few songs from their latest album, Sideshow. Hear it at cooperboone.com.

The Lights... No frightening fluorescents here. Cooper advises having all the lights on dimmers so they can be easily adjusted as the night progresses.

THE P L AY L I S T Cooper keeps the party going with toe-tapping tunes that inspire impromptu dance parties.

Tea Party Raise those pinkies, y’all! The Grammywinning artist invites you behind the scenes of her whimsical birthday bash—a fun and fanciful twist on a ladies’ luncheon. (Psst: There’s vodka in those teacups.) FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY BRITTON SENSENEY PART Y PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY CHRISTINE SUTTON

Kacey Musgraves loves a good theme party, so when the singer-songwriter’s friend suggested a “par-tea” to celebrate Kacey’s 27th birthday, she was ready to break out the china. And that she did. The vintage dishware even inspired the party’s prim-but-not-precious palette of soft pinks tempered with edgier metallics. A tea-infused invitation suite (page 99) set a good-times-are-a-brewin’ tone and encouraged guests to “dress to impress” in their Sunday best. (Hats encouraged!) “We were serious about the dress code because it’s much more fun when everyone participates—and there aren’t two people who show up in gym clothes,” says Kacey. Her Nashville backyard was transformed into what Kacey describes as an “Alice in Wonderlandesque garden party” thanks to twinkling lights, festive garlands and balloons, and a dance floor. Guests nibbled on macarons and sipped cherry limeade (provided by Nashville caterer Crumb de la Crumb) when they weren’t hamming it up in a photo booth. “The night had the most fun atmosphere,” Kacey says. “It truly felt magical.” Here’s a look at the midsummer merriment, along with party-ready recipes inspired by the traditional-with-a-twist theme.

HAZEL VILLAGE NEW YORK, NEW YORK

When Jane Van Cleef says she started sewing early in life, she’s not kidding. Her mother punched holes in manila folders to create sewing cards for her when she was only 3. She moved on to making doll clothes inspired by the American Girl books and, later, clothes for “all the cool kids” in high school. After college, she made her living from sewing gigs. And then one weekend, she had the idea for Hazel Village, a line of organic dolls. “Everything I had ever read as a child or done or liked or learned about all converged. As soon as I thought of it, it was all pretty clear to me,” she says. Six years later, she hasn’t looked back. The charming dolls—each with his or her own backstory—have found a loving audience. “It’s delightful,” she says. “I’m so glad it worked out.”
