Tibbitts 1 Adyson Tibbitts Ms. Amanda Tibbitts Language Arts 12 8 March 2019 Registered Nursing Growing up, I have always loved kids, especially babies. I always said that when I grew up, I would be the nurse that gets to work with the newborn babies. As I have grown older, I have taken a real interest in the career of nursing and I really want to pursue this dream. A registered nurse works as an assistant to the doctors and is the main caregiver to the patients. There is a lot more to registered nursing than most people think. This paper will discuss the many responsibilities of an RN, and what it takes to become one. The nurse holds a lot of responsibility in his or her hands. Beth Ulrich explains that a RN must go into the job knowing clearly his or her responsibility and accountability. The nurse needs to know that the patient is their responsibility and the nurse has to do their best to care for them and keep them alive. They also need to know that they are accountable if something does happen to them and they aren’t cared for correctly. It is important for the nurse to know exactly what is being placed on their shoulders so they can do their job correctly. Nurses will work all hours of every day. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that a patient needs 24 hour care, so a nurse must be on shift for all 24 of those hours. It says that a nurse will have to work on holidays as well. This means that because patients need care all 24 hours of the day, nurses will have to be on shift for 24 hours. This could mean that you have to
Tibbitts 2 work at all times of the day, no matter the day. This is important because as a nurse, you should know when you will have to be working and decide if this schedule will work. A nurse will work intimately with the patient. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses will care for the patients, educate patients and the public about health, and provide emotional support. This explains that the basic responsibilities are to care for the patient and help them while they are at the hospital. The nurse is there for the patients and is there to assist the doctors. This is important because a nurse should know that they are going to be a huge part of the patient’s life while they are there. The nurse needs to decide if they will be able to give the care the patient needs physically and emotionally. One important skill a nurse needs is compassion. The article titled “How to Become a Registered Nurse” says that the emotional care is just as important as physical care in a patient’s recovery. This means that it is a nurse’s responsibility to help the patient heal mentally and emotionally on top of the physical healing. A nurse has to be able to show compassion to the patient. This is important because if a person is not able to show compassion very well, then the person should decide if being a nurse is best for them. A nurse has to let the parents voice be heard, especially in specialties that care for infants and small children. Fegran and Helseth explain that the parents will want to be respected as their child’s parents and as a collaborator in the care. They say that if this doesn’t happen, it can add an extra load to the parent’s. Parents do not want to feel forgotten or like the nurse doesn’t care about their opinion. The parents want their child to be properly cared for and they want their voice to be heard. It does not mean that we listen to them and do what they say, the nurse just has to make them feel valued and heard. This is important because when a nurse doesn’t listen to
Tibbitts 3 them, this can frustrate and upset them and this could end really bad. Patience is a valuable skill that nurses need. The article “How to Become a Registered Nurse” says that in extreme circumstances, a nurse has to have patience with the families and how they may act. A nurse’s patience may be tried and she needs to be able to keep her cool and not freak out on the families. A nurse cannot be impatient with one of her patients or the family. If someone is training to be a nurse, the person needs to know that their patience will be tested. If a nurse in training knows that their patience is really small, then they may want to consider something else to go into. The nursing career has many job opportunities that a nurse can move up in. Most new registered nurses begin as staff nurses and as they gain experience, education, and show good performance, they can be promoted to higher positions (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A new nurse will start at the bottom, but is given opportunities to move up in the field. This is important so the nurse knows they have other opportunities and knows how to get these other opportunities. Neonatal nursing is one specialty. In the article “The 20 best Nursing Career Specialties” it says that neonatal nurses care for premature infants that have health problems.. This means that this type of nurses work with infants who have intense care. These babies are super small or super sick and have a good possibility of dying. This is important to know because if a person is looking into this type of nursing, they need to know every part of the job. Then, the nurse needs to decide if this type of nursing is a good fit for them and decide if they can handle it. Pediatric nursing is another specialty in nursing. A pediatric nurse works with young kids and provides specialized care to these children (The 20 Best Nursing Career Specialties). A pediatric nurse only cares for patients that are children. These children will sometimes have very
Tibbitts 4 bad health problems and will need intense care. This can be a hard thing because sometimes the children will pass away. This is important to know so the nurse can decide if she wants to work with children and learn how to give the special care that children need. The nurse needs to decide if she can handle watching the kids struggle and possibly die. Nurse anesthetists are another specialty a nurse can go into. The article “The 20 Best Nursing Career Specialties” says that these nurses provide anesthesia to patients, manage patient care in the OR, and provide follow up care. It says that these nurses must have a Masters Degree in nurse anesthesia and the salary is $154,300. This type of nurse makes the most out of any of the other nursing specialties, but the nurse also has to go to a lot of schooling. The nurse also has to have a lot of experience in the medical field before they can do this job. This specialty also has a lot of responsibilities, as they are in charge of making sure the patient stays asleep during the surgery. They also have to take care of patients after the surgery. This is important to know because the pay looks very appealing, but the job has a lot of responsibility and takes a lot of time. The person that is interested in this job needs to decide if they want to commit to this time and take on the responsibility. As a nurse, it can be easy to forget yourself. Flavin states that the sacrificial attitude is a great strength, but it can also be detrimental. A nurse is constantly thinking of other people and because of this, he can easily forget himself, which is not good. A nurse still has to remember to take care of themselves. This is important because if the nurse is not healthy, it could impair the way they care for other people. Patients need a nurse to be at their 100% and if the nurse doesn’t care for himself, he can't give the patient 100%.
Tibbitts 5 After researching the nursing career field, the most important thing I learned was that nursing can be a big emotional toll. I have to teach myself how to deal with stress better and how to handle my emotions before I start the job. This research has helped me learn so much and has made me feel so excited to start. I now know what things I need to work on to help myself be ready. I can still learn about more of the qualities that a nurse needs so I can develop them and be the best nurse I can be. This research has taught me a lot and I am excited for my future.
