In the fall of 2017, I had the opportunity to play softball in California. For this tournament, we didn’t have enough players and we needed to find someone we could take with us to fill this spot. My coach had a player in mind that he would like to take with us, but she would need someone to ride with and she didn’t know anyone on the team. My coach texted my mom and told her that this player would feel comfortable riding with me and asked if we would be okay with that. We agreed but it would make my stomach turn to think about taking her with us because I barely knew her. As the tournament got closer, I started to think about this all the time. It was always on my mind and I felt uneasy when I would think about it. We picked her up and we had an instant connection. When we arrived in California, we had some extra free time so we drove to Downtown Disney. We found out that we both shared a love for a restaurant called Tortilla Joe’s. When we were done eating, we walked around and saw a lot of people gathered in one area and we stopped to see. There was a funny magician performing so we stopped to watch. For one of his tricks, he called me out of the audience to help him. My face felt hot and I knew it was red. I was hesitant to go but I went to help him. My friend thought it was hilarious. By the end of the night, I felt like I had known this girl for forever. The rest of the weekend, we became really good friends and became really close. When we had to say goodbye, it was really sad because we didn’t know when we would see each other again. It was crazy to me that I went from being so nervous and hesitant to take her with us to being so sad to say goodbye in just a weekend. We now play on the same team and see each other all the time. The two of us are super good friends and I don’t know what I would do without her. This experience gave me one of my greatest friends and also taught me something important. This experience taught me that if you don’t let yourself take risks, then you can miss out on the greatest opportunities. One of my softball coaches always told us that, “You must get uncomfortable to get comfortable.” Stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead you to great things and can even help you better your life. It showed me the greatest things can come from taking the biggest risks, even though it can be really scary.
