Conflicts Research Paper "Borders, like so many other political devices, are essentially designed to serve the interests of the elite." Conflicts of political geography throughout history have been rooted in both religious and ethnic differences along with the placement of borders. Rarely are they about one or the other but, instead, contain a multiplicity of factors which always have geographic causes and consequences. In this project you will be assigned the task of understanding the multiple sides of ONE ethnic or religious conflict and analyzing the geographic implications of that struggle. Some of these conflicts have died down but the ethnic and/or religious tensions that precipitated these events are still very current. In the end you will create a presentation of both sides of this dispute in the context of a traditional research paper. Step 1: Conflict Assignment 1. Arab-Israeli Dispute 2. Ireland Catholics vs. Protestants 3. Kosovo vs. Serbia 4. Nigeria Boko Haram conflict 5. Sri Lanka Tamils vs. Sinhalese 6. Cyprus Turks vs. Greeks 7. Hutus vs. Tutsis in Rwanda and Burundi 8. Croats and Serbs in the Former Yugoslavia 9. Hindus vs. Muslims in India (focus on Kashmir) 10. Chechens vs. Russians in Chechnya 11. Syrian Civil War and Isis 12. Western Saharan Conflict Step 2: Research the sides Using internet databases and other “scholarly”, respected sources you need to uncover the basic causes of the conflict. Write a minimum five page report that addresses the following ( and don’t forget the geo vocab!!). In text citation is required throughout the paper. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Summary of the ethnic groups involved including belief systems, history and geography(location) Causes of the conflict including opinion of both sides ( point of view) Specific conflict details Major turning points in the conflict Resolutions Current status of the conflict Impact of the conflict on the geography of the area ( have borders changed? Has the landscape changed?) You must include a map here! 8. Include at the end of your report maps of the conflict area including territory controlled or dominated by each side with detailed explanation of the maps you selected and why. 9. Works cited of a minimum of five sources cited using MLA format, including appropriate in text citation.

*Remember that standard professional reports should follow these rules. - No larger than 12 point font - Standard font style ( Times New Roman, Arial or the like) - Have a properly formatted cover page ( NOT part of your page count) with title and class information - Have Works Cited as a separate sheet ( NOT part of your page count) five source minimum - Standard margins ( whatever comes as the default) - Typed/Double Spaced - include IN TEXT citations - include page numbers As you are writing this over break we do not have class time to go over format so I have included example links below.
