From the desk of the principal: H1N1 Information Everyday we are hearing on the news, reading in the papers and seeing on the internet information and updates related to H1N1. Our school district is monitoring this situation very closely and we are communicating with county health agencies regularly. Please read the attached information updating the current flu status in our district and the flu vaccination schedule. There is a lot of good information included in this newsletter about recognizing flu symptoms and general information about the flu. Chalk one up for the Green Team! I wanted to congratulate our Franklin Green Team for earning a grant to purchase three additional portable recycling bins for Franklin School. Thank you to Dana Wessel for her efforts and accomplishments with the Green team and for applying for this grant. Family Fun Night It appears the weather is going to be gloomy and we are looking at a weekend indoors. Why not come to Franklin’s Family Fun Night tomorrow night, Friday the 23rd from 6:009:00! Be with Friends! Have some Pizza and treats! Dance and enjoy the fun activities. Family Fun Night supports the PTA and who is dedicated to supporting our Franklin students. Red Ribbon Week The Franklin PTA and Student Council have done an outstanding job promoting Red Ribbon Week. A special thank you to Mrs. Malin for her planning and leadership of this event. Please continue the effort at home by talking with your children and reinforcing the message that healthy, drug free living is the way to go!

*** H1N1 Flu Update – October 22, 2009 *** 1 – Current Flu Status in District 64 2 – Flu Vaccination Schedule

1 – Current Flu Status in District 64 As expected by health officials, absences due to flu-like illnesses are occurring in District 64. Symptoms include: fever of 100 degrees or above; cough; sore throat; runny or stuffy nose; body aches; headache; chills; fatigue; and sometimes, diarrhea and vomiting. Typically, the ill person will have a fever and one or more of these symptoms. The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) informs us that routine lab testing for H1N1 flu is not being recommended except for severely ill and hospitalized patients. Since seasonal flu is not generally seen this early in the year, it is assumed that persons with such flu-like symptoms have H1N1 flu. District 64 has seen an increase in student absences. We appreciate that parents are being vigilant about keeping sick children home. Children should not return to school until being fever-free (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours or as advised by your physician, whichever is longer. A doctor’s note, however, is not required to return to school. We ask your cooperation: ! Please report all symptoms when calling in children absent from school. This information helps us monitor illness within our District so that we can supply timely updates to CCDPH. We will continue to work closely with the health department in determining if and when any further steps may be needed. ! Please take the time to read three flyers included with this update: 1. Warning signs that a child may have a serious illness due to the flu 2. Action steps for parents with children at high risk for flu complications 3. Seasonal and 2009 H1N1 Flu: A guide for parents

2 – Flu Vaccination Schedule Please read the important guidance on seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations from CCDPH attached to this update. CCDPH “urges all parents to contact their health care provider to schedule an appointment to vaccinate their child with the H1N1 vaccine. Your health care provider is the ideal source for your family’s personal health needs….” In addition, as announced in the last school newsletter, District 64 is cooperating with CCDPH to offer H1N1 flu vaccinations to students at school later this fall. CCDPH has announced a schedule by zip code. At present, we believe that District 64 will not be scheduled to serve as a site for vaccinations until at least after Thanksgiving break. However, we expect to be updated by CCDPH later this month as the vaccination program gets underway and more is known about the availability of the vaccine. We will utilize both Phone and E-Mail Alerts when we have more information about the schedule and to announce that parental permission forms and other information are available. *** Visit the District 64 H1N1 Flu Information Center via a link from your school or District 64 Web site. ***
