Control of papaya ring spot virus through cross protection Papaya ring spot virus (PRV) causes one of the most destructive disease of papaya. PRV limits papaya production in some areas of Hawaii, Florida, Caribbean countries, South America, Africa, India and Far East. PRV is transmitted by aphids in a non persistent manner and has been placed in the poty virus group. The virus is serologically identical to watermelon mosaic virus 1 (WMV-1) which is of economic wherever cucurbits are grown. Several unsuccessful attempts have been made to develop effective control measures for PRV. Although tolerant selections of papaya have been described resistance to PRV doesn’t occur within C.papaya.some species of C.papaya are resistant to PRV. Unfortunately, these species are incompatible with c. papaya and conventional interspecific hybridization has been unsuccessful.
