Select

This phase selects or defines the improvement projects. It identifies critical customer requirements and links them to business needs. It also defines the business processes to be undertaken for continuous improvement.

To develop an action plan.

Criteria for selection

In general, any process you choose to improve should be: A process that is important to meeting your customers requirements and / or A process that is critical to the successful achievement of your organizations goals.

Measure

This phase involves selecting product characteristic, mapping respective process, making necessary measurements and recording the results of the process. This is essentially a data collection phase.

Objectives of Measurement phase

Collect baseline performance data for identified projects. Understand current problems.

Analyze

In this phase an action plan is created to close the “gap” between how things currently work and how the organization would like them to work in order to meet the goals for a particular product or service.

The objective of this phase is to study the current processes in terms of what?, who?, how?, when? and where?. To establish an improvement goal or the performance objective.

Improve

This phase involves improving processes/product performance characteristics for achieving desired results and goals. This phase involves application of scientific tools and techniques for making tangible improvements in profitability and customer satisfaction.

Objectives of Improvement phase



To develop a proposed solution to the existing problems.



To confirm that the proposed solution will meet the desired quality improvement goals.



To identify resources required for successful implementation of the solution.



To plan and execute actual improvements.

Control

This phase requires the process conditions to be properly documented and monitored. This phase requires institutionalizing SMAIC into day to day working of the organization. In this phase the gains derived by certain specific projects are applied to the other projects as well for optimum business results.

Objectives of control phase



To ensure that our processes stay in control after the improvement solution has been implemented and



To quickly detect the out of control state and determine the associated causes so that actions can be taken to control the problem before nonconformances are produced.
