June 21, 2004 Dear Staff Member, I am conducting a Master degree’s thesis in Applied Linguistics that explores teaching behaviors of native and non-native EFL teachers in a Thai university context. My aim is to gather data that clarify what is going on in classrooms and how EFL university teachers perceive their teaching, and how their perceptions affect their teaching behaviors. In doing so, I need various pieces of information in order to clarify teaching behaviors. To collect this information, I will use triangulation method for ensuring research validity. The three data collection tools are individual interviews, classroom observations, and focus group interviews. The individual interviews will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the answers and the data for interviews is needed to be filled out below. For classroom observstions, the researcher will observe teachers in their classrooms with the permission from the teachers. The last tool is focus group interviews. This discussions will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour depending on the informants, and the date for discussions will be asked later. If you are willing to participate in this study, please complete the form attached and put it in your mailbox at the Department of Foreign Languages at your earliest conveneince. It is important to note that participation in this study is completely voluntary and anonymous, and the participants are free to withdraw from the study at anytime. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this study, please feel free to contact me at (05) 1324688 or at

I am conducting a Master degree’s thesis in Applied Linguistics that explores teaching behaviors of native and non-native EFL teachers in a Thai university context. My aim is to gather data that clarify what is going on in classrooms and how EFL university (both native and non-native English speaking) teachers perceive their teaching, and how their perceptions affect their teaching behaviors. In doing so, I need various pieces of information in order to clarify teaching behaviors. To collect this information, I will use triangulation method for ensuring research validity. The three data collection tools are individual interviews, classroom observations, and focus group interviews. The individual interviews will provide the participants with opportunities to express their perceptions of teaching. This method will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Then the classroom observations will help the researcher document what really happens in the classrooms, including teaching behaviors of the teachers in their classrooms. For focus group interviews, the participant can discuss and share ideas with other teachers in different topics in relation to issues under an investigation. Each discussion will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour. It is important to note that participation in this study is completely voluntary and anonymous, and the participants are free to withdraw from the study at anytime. Moreover, their participation will not interfere with the teachers’ teaching hours. To conduct a study in this institute, I am writing to request for your permission. Your contribution is valuable and highly appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
