Conditional Sentence Type 2 This type 2 conditional sentence refers to a situation in the present, namely an action that may occur in the present if the past situation was carried out. Conditional sentence can be used when the results of a condition do not have or only a few possibilities to be realized because the condition cannot be fulfilled in the present.

In type 2 conditional sentences, tense in the “if clause” is simple past and tense in the “main clause” is present conditional or present continuous conditional.

if clause • if+simple past

• if this thing happened

main clause present conditional or present continous conditional that thing would happen.

In conditional sentences type 2, you can also use modals in the main clause and not to state the level of certainty, permission, or recommendation regarding the outcome or final effect. The formula used for conditional sentence type 2 is: • if + simple past, would / could / might + bare infinitive or would / could / might + bare infinitive + simple past. • if there are negative presuppositions, the formula if ... not can be replaced with unless.

Just like in all conditional sentences, the order of clauses is not fixed. You may have to adjust the pronoun and punctuation when changing the order of clauses, but the meaning is the same. Example:  If it rained, you would get wet. You would get wet if it rained.  If you went to bed earlier you wouldn't be so tired. You wouldn't be so tired if you went to bed earlier.  If she fell, she would hurt herself. She would hurt herself if she fell.

Type 2 conditionals refer to conditions that are unlikely to occur or presuppositions and possible outcomes. These sentences are not based on real situations. In conditional type 2 sentences, the time is now or whenever and the situation is not real or presupposition. Example:  If the weather isn't so bad, we would go to the park. (But, the weather is bad so we can't go.)  If I were the Queen of England, I would give everyone a chicken. (But, I'm not the Queen.)
