Athens, 6 March 2009 Conclusions from the conduct of first four scheduled Seminars Up today, 4 three-day Seminars of HELMEPA’s new Voluntary Training Program titled "Environmental Culture into Vessel's Management and Operation" have taken place. These seminars were attended by a total of 33 participants, 22 deck officers, 10 engineer officers and 1 company staff member. The participants evaluated the seminars as follows: 87%: very good to excellent. 74%: the information and the knowledge of the impact of the daily ship operation to the marine environment and the atmosphere can essentially contribute to the friendlier operation of the ship and the better implementation of MARPOL regulations. Their majority is being informed on environmental issues basically by HELMEPA and their company. The majority also believes that ballast water management, atmospheric pollution, solid waste management, the understanding of MARPOL regulations and the Oil Record Book are items where difficulties or problems encountered with regard to the implementation of MARPOL and other environmental requirements. Topics proposed to be included in the next training program of HELMEPA, include: -
Survival at sea following and accident, New technologies in life-saving means, First aid and hygiene on ships, Management of residues, Fire fighting - Fire protection, Operation and maintenance of pollution prevention equipment, and Oil Record Book
