US to see end of an 'aura' by 2025 Brazil, Russia, India and China, with Indonesia, Turkey and Iran from the Muslim world, will be the most powerful players, says a latest report from the National Intelligence Council. Washington: A recent report from US intelligence agencies concludes that US dominance in the fields of economy, military and politics will very likely decline in the upcoming two decades. The new emerging powers of the world will be China, India and Russia, the National Intelligence Council (NIC) concluded in its report. “The next 20 years of transition to a new system are fraught with risks,” notes Global Trends 2025, A Transformed World.” The 121page document is the latest of the reports that the NIC prepares every four years in time for the next presidential term. The dollar may no longer be the world's major currency, but Washington will retain its considerable military advantages, but scientific and technological advances; the use of “irregular warfare tactics”; the proliferation of long-range precision weapons; and the growing use of cyber warfare “increasingly will constrict US freedom of action.” The report forecast the most powerful players being Brazil, Russia, India and China. It also described an unprecedented transfer

of wealth from the West to the East, and a staggering population increase of 1.5 billion people, which would put pressure on increasingly scarce resources such as energy, food and water. The report also identified three potential up and coming powers, all from the Muslim world but not Arab nations: They are Indonesia, Turkey and Iran. Political and economic reform in Iran, along with a stable investment climate, “could fundamentally redraw both the way the world perceives the country and also the way in which Iranians view themselves.” “Under those circumstances, economic resurgence could take place quickly in Iran and embolden a latent cosmopolitan, educated, at times secular Iranian middle class,” it said. The question of Turkey's ultimate EU membership will be “a test of Europe's outward focus between now and 2025. Increasing doubts about Turkey's chances are likely to slow its implementation of political and human rights reforms.” Cont. on page 7

Romania Muslims in Unity Hajj Constanta, Romania: This year's Hajj will melt racial, ethnic and cultural differences among Romanian Muslims with pilgrims embarking on the ultimate soul-searching experience under one umbrella. "Tatars, Turks, Romans and Arabs will be going together in this year's Hajj trip," says Adnan Oun, director of the Taiba Foundation, one of the two Hajj organizers.The journey, co-organized by the Islamic Cultural League, will be the first time Romanian pilgrims unit in one pilgrimage trip. Taiba and the League, the two main Muslim organisations in the European country, used to organise separate Hajj trips every year.

Oun believes this year's trip will have a very positive effect. "It will definitely consolidate ties and enhance cooperation among all segments of the Muslim community." There are some 70,000 Muslims in Romanian, making up two percent of its 22 million population. Most Romanian Muslims belong to the Tatar, Turkish or Albanian ethnic communities. Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam has always been of a special importance for Romanian Muslims as back as the Ottomans era. A small village in the country's southeast, which carries the name "Hagieni" meaning pilgrims in Arabic, stands as evidence.n

Several Days in Afghanistan as an Unembedded Journalist The only winners emerging from Afghanistan these days are the drug barons who preside over the world's largest heroin trade. By Yvonne Ridley

T

he day after US war planes bombed an Afghan wedding party killing more than 30 women and children, I drove from Pakistan 's troubled tribal areas to the border crossing .Feeling rather sensitive towards my own security as a white westerner, I decided to throw on an all-enveloping burqa and make my way across in the anonymity this garment gives women travellers. As I walked across the border at Torkham towards the Afghan passport control office, I heard someone barking in a loud, aggressive American accent at one of the drivers held up at the US-controlled checkpoint. I looked up and watched as a heavily armoured, helmeted soldier pointed his gun and continued screaming in a rude manner for the driver to get in line. It obviously did not occur to him that most of the people in earshot could only understand Pashto. I really despaired and felt sorry for those Afghans who were being greeted by this obnoxious alien in uniform as they entered their own country. Now I know most Americans don't do humility, but a little sensitivity should have been called for on that day … it was the day after nearly 90 wedding guests had been wiped out in yet another US airstrike. I have now spent several days in Afghanistan as an unembedded journalist, traveling around freely without an armed or military escort. Yes, it's risky and at times nerve-wracking, but if I want to find out what is really happening on the ground I'm not going to get it hiding in some hotel compound or army barracks being briefed by an army spokesman who knows even less than me. So far I've spoken to men and women from all backgrounds, cultures and Islamic ideologies and without exception they're hacked off with the American presence. All the goodwill I saw after the fall of the Taliban has been squandered by the military presence of the US as well as the British (no one really distinguishes between the two) and it is crystal clear they have overstayed their welcome. The Taliban are in control of large swathes of the country and are now bordering on Kabul having already carried out several raids on the capital where Afghan leader Hamid Karzai is under virtual siege.

Since his installation as president, he has often been accused of being a US puppet, but even he is attempting to break free from those in Washington pulling the strings. Without a doubt, the continued presence of US and British forces has swung violently from being regarded as the solution to becoming the cause of most of the problems. Peacemakers view the arrival of more troops with spiraling despair while the Taliban and their supporters rub their hands with glee reckoning, a larger enemy presence will make an easier target. Of course moronic comments by the likes of Commander Jeff Bender, a US forces spokesman, don't help. After the Kandahar wedding attack he said: "The coalition and Afghan authorities are investigating reports of non-combatant casualties in the village of Wech Baghtu . "If innocent people were killed in this operation, we apologise and express our condolences to the families and the people of Afghanistan ."What does he mean “if innocent people were killed”. It seems this US insensitivity isn't just confined to the uniformed grunts at the Torkham border. Does Commander Jeff Bender think that the 33 dead women and children his warplanes wiped out were enemy combatants? Scores of Afghans have been killed in American air strikes this year, fuelling the resentment against the presence of foreign troops and widening the rift between President Karzai and his western puppet masters. The only winners emerging from Afghanistan these days are the drug barons who preside over the world's largest heroin trade and the pimps who control the Chinese prostitutes operating from the scores of bordellos and brothels which have emerged since the US military occupation. So there you have it – Afghanistan a country in the grip of reckless soldiers, slappers and smack. How Noisy We Are…. A time may soon come when nature, birds and animals will gang up together to wage a war against humans for destroying their habitats and their lives with our greed for more…more malls, more monstrous machines and more noise!

oon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation.... tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation. ~Jean Arp Jean Arp has excellently wrapped up the scenario in which we are living today. Take a look at how you start your day. At home, the roaring rotation of the washing machine, the whistle of the kettle or the pressure cooker. Out you move on your vehicle to drive to work or elsewhere and the hooting and beeping of horns, the angry and impatient 'barking' of men and women at each other in a traffic jam will greet you. Earlier, the telephone sat still on our drawing room tables. Today, the mobile phone dominates our lives so much that we check a million times if the little naughty fellow is tucked in safely in our pockets and handbags. And in the process we forget to carry our parent's necessary shopping list. Cell phone providers are making roaring business selling their wares of different ring-tones to add to the din. From a whistling train to a horrifying Bollywood latest song tune, mobile phones start ringing anytime of the day or night all around us. Some go one step further. They add jazz or pop or a melancholic Hindi song as their caller tune – imposing such 'atrocities' on the poor caller. Technology has grown by leaps and bounds, no doubt. These machines and metallic monsters do make everything a wee bit faster. It also makes life easy in the sense that communication, travel, business and bread and butter come faster. But at what cost? Have we human

beings ever reflected on the virtues of moderation? Noise pollution caused by the monstrous malls around us or the robotic vehicles around us effects not just humans, but birds and animals too. As far as humans are concerned, the din can cause fatigue, mental stagnation, stress and a whole lot of mental and physical side effects. Birds keep away from places where they find human noise. It is one of the reasons why sparrows have disappeared from cities. Keep some nuts on your kitchen window ledge. A lone squirrel may drop by to gobble it up. But the pressure cooker whistle will frighten the pretty creature away. So who's depriving the squirrels of their lunch? Humans of course! A true story which I wish to narrate here illustrates how selfish we humans can turn out to be. Once upon a time, there lived a cock called Kingsley whom I knew in a thickly populated area in a city. He was a pet and belonged to a family who had kept him to provide company for the team of hens they had. He was the lone cock in the pack--very beautiful and

majestic. Sharp at 5 am he would crow each day. He was a cock, so he crowed. Nobody had any right to stop him or question him! This was his routine each day. But one day at 5 am Kingsley did not crow. Investigations revealed that Kingsley had been eaten up and he was “chilli chicken” on somebody's dinner plate. It seems his crowing had disturbed the neighbourhood! How low can man stoop too? We humans cannot put up with an innocent cock's cute crow, while the birds, animals and other creatures of nature have so long been putting up with the horrible din we humans create. Time for each one of us to shake our noisy conscience and imbibe silence into our souls.
