About Aircel Limited About the Promoters Maxis Communications Berhad, which started commercial operations in 1995, is the leading telecommunications service provider in Malaysia. Maxis is Malaysia's leading telecommunications company and market leader with a total mobile phone subscriber base of more than seven million, as at 30 September 2005. Surpassing the seventh million mark has become a milestone in our list of achievements. Maxis’ expansion into Indonesia and India is a milestone in it’s aspiration to be a regional communications operator. The acquisition of a 51% stake in PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler (NTS), Indonesia and a stake of a 26% equity interest in Aircel, India will provide tremendous growth opportunities for Maxis. These acquisitions give Maxis a strong foothold in two of the world’s most attractive high-growth, lowpenetration markets, while diversifying our market base.

Brief about Aircel Aircel is a leading telecommunications group in Tamil Nadu and Chennai with a track record of making mobile telephony affordable to the Indian masses. Given its leadership position and a low 10% mobile penetration rate among Tamil Nadu’s 65 million strong population, the southern state itself provides a very good growth opportunity for Maxis. The Aircel Group is focusing its business line in the field of    

ABS – WiMAX WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a technology to allow devices to form wireless connections to permit the carrying of internet packet data. WiMAX as a "last mile" Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is an alternative to cable modem service, telephone company Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or T1/E1 service. WiMAX caters BWA and provides MAN (Metropolitan

Area Network) with throughput (speed) of 40 Mbps per Base station, typically in a cell size of 2 – 10 Kms.

Unlike wired solutions, WIMAX requires no digging trenches for telecommunication cables, and no overhanging cables that can snap anytime. WiMAX offers a fast, affordable, convenient solution to India’s widespread Internet access needs. WiMAX network works on Near Line of sight (NLOS) technology and IEEE 802.16d wireless standard. In a NLOS link, a signal reaches the receiver through reflections, scattering, and diffractions. The signals arriving at the receiver consists of components from the direct path, multiple reflected paths, scattered energy, and diffracted propagation paths. The figure below is a pictorial depiction of the paths used in WiMAX technology.

WiMAX can be used for a number of applications, including "last mile" broadband connections, hotspots and cellular backhaul, and high-speed enterprise connectivity for business. Based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, WiMAX is expected to enable true broadband speeds over wireless networks at a cost point to enable mass market adoption.

ABS’s experience with WiMAX deployment ABS has successfully deployed IEEE 802.16-2004 WiMAX base stations in 36 cities across India. The backend systems and processes (OSS / BSS) of ABS are highly sophisticated with end-to-end manageability from sales prospecting to order management and internet protocol (IP) provisioning. All these systems are developed in-house and have the capability to accommodate future business requirements of ABS.
