COG (Christian Outreach Group) concept was created by Chaplain Don Russell in 2007. Chaplain Don created the concept after seeking God, fasting and praying about meeting a request. The request came from two people, a married couple. The husband was suffering with a medical condition that threatened to take his life. As a result they sought out Chaplain Don. They had seen God move through Chaplain Don in other ways and felt they could get closer to God by associating with him. They requested that he start a weekly meeting. After serving as a Senior Pastor in four different denominations over 15 years Chaplain Don had lost all confidence in the traditional church model. He prayed, fasted and cried out to God for guidance over a season. At the end of the season he saw a unique approach to gathering together. He called it the “COG” standing for “Christian Outreach Group”. The Cog is a small group of people who gather together for a specific clearly defined outreach purpose in the name of Jesus Christ. The purpose of the meetings is to gather for prayer, seeking God, planning and implementation for the goals associated with the seeing God move through them to meet the defined need. God reveals the outreach project to the group. All the members of the group agree to work together to meet the need. Chaplain Don, his wife Sue, the requesting couple and eight other people started meeting to provide specific support to Pastor Amegble Kossi Zephyrin by sending four members of the group to Pastor Zeph in Lome Togo Africa in January of 2008. The four that felt called to go to Africa had no money or time available to leave the county\try for two weeks. They met weekly with the eight who worked with them to raise funds. In 12 months the group raised more money than ever expected, went to Lome Togo and gave more than ever expected to help Pastor Zeph. Today group members continue to send support to Pastor Zeph. God is using the group to provide medicine to sick children and adults in Lome and small outlying villages. They are building a mission compound to house abandoned children, Orphanage Administration and visiting missionaries and they provide for outreach from the center in downtown Lome.
