The coaching Process Lesson 1: what is the coaching process? Is coaching a science or an art?

What is the coaching process?

What is the coaching process?

The term ‘coaching process’ is the most appropriate one to use when describing the purposeful engagement of the athlete and the coach for the purpose of improving performance (Lyle & Cross, 1999; Lyle, 2002).

However, that conceptual clarity appears to strip the process of its human , social and emotional character. Identifying the essential elements of the coaching process is important for the development of the conceptual framework, but it should be remembered that the actual engagement of athletes and the coach is an extended period of social activity, commitment, success and failure, emotional highs and lows, interaction within organisations, personal ambition and status, personal cost and achievement, and a mix of short term, medium and long term satisfaction and enjoyment (Lyle, 2002)
