CHAPTER 4
FRICTION CLUTCH AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Learning Goals 1.
2. 3.
Understand the function of clutches and its variation. Understand basic clutch analysis Solve problems related to clutch and its applications.
What is Clutch? 1.0 Introduction to Clutches
Clutch is a mechanical device used to engage or disengaged the driving and driven shaft instantaneously without stopping it using clutch pedal. Used in automobiles and automation industry.
Types of Clutch 1. Single Plate Clutch
1. Electromagnetic Clutch
Types of Clutch 1. Multi Plate Clutch in CR-V Honda

How Clutch Works? 1. Clutch in Automobiles
How Clutch Works? 1. Clutch in Automobiles The flywheel is a large steel or aluminum disc. It acts as a balance weight for the engine, dampening engine vibrations caused by the firing of each cylinder and provides a surface that the clutch can contact . The clutch disc is a steel plate, covered with a frictional material that is sandwiched between the flywheel and the pressure plate. When the clutch is engaged, the disc is "squeezed" between the flywheel and pressure plate, and power from the engine is transmitted by the disc's hub to the input shaft of the transmission. When the clutch pedal is disengaged, the "Throw-out bearing" pushes the pressure plate's release fingers. The pressure plate pulls away from the clutch disc, disengaging the clutch, thus interrupting power flow. (See
Clutch Analysis and Example Refer to File 1
Do It Yourself Question in Class QUESTION 1 A multi plate clutch is to transmit 12 kW at 1500 rpm. The inner and outer radii for the plates are 50 mm and 100 mm respectively. The maximum axial spring force is restricted to 1 kN. Calculate the necessary number of pairs of surfaces if and assuming constant wear. What will be the necessary axial force? (Ans: 3, 970 N)
Readability AnalysisAssignment 4 1.
