Deutsch Klassen bei Herrn Adams DEUTSCH: E-mail: [email protected] Prep Period: 8th Period, Room 201 Online Home: www.easternhancockgerman.org This year I will continue using the teaching method called TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Each student’s participation and feedback during class is extremely important. Your feedback helps me be a better teacher and you learn more! Projects will include podcasting, blogging, creating videos, etc. We have an online course environment (MOODLE) we will use for some test/ quizzes, online chats, blogging, forums, etc. I also post important class information within the MOODLE, on the website and the blog. Course content will be guided by the Indiana State Standards for World Languages. I hope to incorporate at least one field trip in each course. If you need additional help, please see me during Homeroom/Before-After School also!! I may be available online within the MOODLE for some “cyber” help!

Classroom Expectations BE COOL-Respect differences and be kind to others, follow school rules , take pride in your work, give 100 +% effort in class, respect the property of others, actively and positively participate in classroom activities, help others who need help, be on time to class and turning in assignments. NOT CRUEL--- refrain from name calling, bullying, damaging / taking property of others, disrupting others who are working, breaking school rules, wasting time. ALL RULES AND POLICIES OF CSC Eastern Hancock and EHHS will be enforced/ respected in this classroom!

Clarification on ATTENDANCE/TARDIES: You are TARDY if you are not in classroom/assigned location at the designated time for the beginning of that period! (Usually indicated by the bell). A pattern of lateness with a pass will result in me speaking with the instructor or responsible person to clarify the reason. If the explanation is not satisfactory, it may result in tardies. Likewise, do not ask to leave my class early to work on other coursework. This course is NOT a study hall, so please do not assume you will have “free time”.

GRADES: Grading policies of the school will be followed. Your grade will be calculated as follows: •50 % **Tests/Quizzes- tests/ quizzes will mostly be unannounced. It is important for both of us to have an accurate assessment of what you can do, not how well you study. Accurate feedback will help me better plan lessons and you to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses. I usually don’t give quizzes/tests until I am confident students are ready! •P.O.P. Quizzes (Proof Of Proficiency) If a student proves to me outside the classroom setting that they know the material, they will be excused from certain tests/quizzes and receive credit!!! There is NO NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE for making the effort!!! I will also be setting up some group rewards for classes when group goals are met. For example, if an entire class period passes a P.O.P. •25 % Participation- (see “Bezahl Mir” below) Because a lot of the work will be done orally in class the participation grade is a large part of your grade. •25% Non- Test work osuch as: timed writings, projects, homework, etc.

Bezahl mir!! (Pay me!) •Each student will begin the grading period with a set number of participation points. (50 Point per Six Weeks) •Each Violation will result in a student „paying“ me 10 points from the participation points for that six weeks. •In order to keep your points, you must: oBe in class. oBe engaged in the German Lesson- eye contact with me or the person speaking for the lesson is important. oContribute feedback during the lesson. oOnly work on the class lesson. Working on other work will result in those materials being taken away for the class period, or longer. oRespond in the language the question was asked.

oOnly make positive comments to/about your peers in class. This is to help maintain a safe environment, in which ALL students feel respected for their contributions. oClean up materials after any project oBring all necessary materials for class (book, writing utensil, German Notebook, etc.) **Any other action/lack of action which I deem to be a detriment to your learning and participating in class, or which interferes with ability of others to do so will also result in loss of points. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE UP THE PARTICIPATION POINTS!! •First Three Violations per semesteroSpeak German with me outside of class time(this cannot count as P.O.P.). They should be made up within 3 school days of the infraction. •After the third violation: oHand-Write 100 words in German and English Translation •When you are absent I will deduct 10 points from the participation grade UNTIL you have made up time with me to review material you missed. Often, I will have an online option for you to make up these points for an absence! GENERAL MAKE UP WORK POLICY: I will follow the Policy in the Student Handbook. If you are absent and excused, it is YOUR responsibility to obtain and complete the make up work. Other late work will generally not be accepted for credit. GERMAN BINDER: Each Student will maintain a German Class Binder. It must be a three ring binder. From time to time I will have you leave the binder, so I can grade it. The binder must be well organized with papers in the chronological order they were assigned. OTHER SUPPLIES: Each student must have the following supplies for class. I will let you know which day you should bring them to class: •One pair of scissors •Glue Stick(s) •Set of Markers (at least 8 count)
