ATKINS

Business facts Atkins is a multinational design and engineering consultancy We provide expertise to help resolve complex challenges presented by the built and natural environment. We’re proud to be pioneers in Carbon Critical Design and we put sustainability at the heart of every design question we’re faced with. By taking an integrated approach to eco-friendly design, our business stays responsive to the ever-growing need to minimise environmental impact for the benefit of all. When it comes to carbon reduction, we practice what we preach. Our Bristol office has been rated ‘Excellent’ by the industry leading measure, BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method). As well as providing a contemporary work space, this building incorporates energy saving features like an air conditioning system without any moving parts and a rain harvester on the roof. The cutting-edge projects we’re working on have a real impact on people’s lives. Take our visionary remodelling of Birmingham New Street station, or our back-to-basics approach to reduce the congestion at Oxford Circus. Our pioneering diagonal design will help around up to 40,000 people per hour to move freely around one of the busiest crossings in the world.

Then there is ‘Anaconda’, a 200 metre long rubber tube which will create energy by ‘pulsing’ under the sea. The latest tests show that the output will easily rival any other renewable source of electricity, meaning Anaconda represents a genuine breakthrough in marine technology. Our Graduate Development Programme Our programme is designed to give you choices about how your career unfolds. Gaining invaluable experience on a range of influential projects, you’ll work alongside some of the brightest people in the industry to achieve your chosen professional accreditation. NETWORK RAIL

Business facts Network Rail delivers, manages and develops the transport network that makes Britain work. From tracks and signals, to stations, viaducts and tunnels, their remit is huge, the effects far reaching. Right now, they’re facing Britain’s biggest challenges head on. While enabling three million passenger journeys every day, not to mention freight traffic, they’re developing a railway that’s fit for the 21st century. Rail is the greenest, safest form of travel in the UK. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the busiest it’s been for 60 years. With a predicted growth of 30 per cent over the next ten years, there’s an unprecedented period of change ahead, and no doubt there will be many challenges along the way. To make sure they’re ready for the demands of tomorrow, Network Rail have £34.6bn of investment and will be recruiting 135 graduates into a range of disciplines. No other scheme can offer such a breadth of opportunity for graduate engineers. Already behind some of the most important projects in the country, such as the £9bn redevelopment of the West Coast Mainline, Network Rail has big plans for the future. In fact, they’re managing one of the leading Engineering portfolios in Europe. If you’re lucky enough to join them, you could see yourself becoming part of schemes such

as Crossrail, the single, largest civil engineering project in Europe. It’s a chance for you to cut your teeth on some of the most exciting work available: work that will literally change the face of Britain. The Civil Engineering programme is structured around the Institute of Civil Engineer’s list of core objectives – awareness, knowledge, experience and ability. You’ll enjoy development that is broad ranging and varied. That will mean spending time with contractors and consultancies, learning how to marry 150-year-old structures with state-of-theart developments and working on a range of fascinating, exciting projects. With every step you’ll make a genuine and real impact on what the company delivers. You’ll become part of a team – that will give you the opportunity to see, first-hand, the way the organisation manages, maintains, designs and renews all of their structures, earthworks and property. Problem solving doesn’t get much bigger than this. Not only will you need a relevant degree and accreditation, you’ll also need to possess a logical mind and the ability to work at pace. You’ll succeed if you’re able to think round challenges, to balance considerations and to never rely on the easy solution.
