Circulation and breathing Every cell in the body needs oxygen to function. Oxygen from the air passes into the bloodstream from the lungs. Oxygenated blood is then pumped by the heart to all of the cells in the body.
The respiratory system Respiratory is the biochemical process that releases energy from food within the cells of the body. This process is fuelled by oxygen from the air, drawn into the lungs by the movement of the diaphragm. The system also expels the by-products of respiration, water and carbon dioxide.
The circulatory system • Arteries, vessels that carry blood away from the heart. They have muscular walls that help them pump the blood at high pressure. Apart from the pulmonary artery, they carry oxygenated blood, which is bright red.
